Best weapon against the floating heads, Rad Spikes! Hit em once and it takes out the whole bunch in a few seconds. I never did figure out the best weapon/strategy against Zec tho. Grenades huh? Actually, by the end of the game I'd unlocked all the weapons but hadn't even tried the 3 most powerful ones. I got so used to my faves. Rad Spikes and Zappers were my bread and butter.
I wish I knew how long I played it for but the XBox app offers no time played info. Overall it's as barebones as the Epic Launcher. :/

Yup grenades. Aim just behind them and the blast will go off behind the shield. If you have the fully upgraded version of the banger then it will take them out in 1 shot. If you watch that video I posted, one of the last ships I went to had a ship filled to the brim with them.

Rad Spikes were the best weapon against Zecs for me too. It would take a few seconds by they actually have very little health. And the shields don't protect them from the radiation. It was either that or the big cannon, but the ammo for that was too expensive to use very often.

Tried to go back to it this week to get deeper into the gameplay, but bounced off again due to the lack of variety. Maybe problem is with the pacing, or it's just the overall gameplay loop isn't that much interesting. Yeah, it points to cult classics, but that doesn't matter much, since the game doesn't seem to do anything with it. It's not broken, and it has British sense of humor, so that's around 6/10 for me.

I'd argue it's not even got the British sense of humour. It has unfunny lines spoken with a British accent. It's like the writers realised the barks weren't that funny and instead of re-writing them just hired Brit voice talent, 'cos everything's funny in Cockney, right?

By British humor I think Judith's referring to how the biggest obstacle in your path isn't space aliens, but red tape. The whole narrative is very Hitchhiker's Guide.

Sorry Malf, as a non-native I'm not great at catching that distinction. You may be right about the humor.

While I'm thinking about it, I'm going to crosspost my review I posted on Discord.

I just got Void Bastards and have been playing it today. If you want me to sum it up for you, it reminds me most of System Shock 2. It's like snippets of randomized System Shock 2 levels, in a comic book form, with one of those narrators they put in British comedies like Hitchhiker's Guide.
Beyond that, it's just like FTL; you're jumping from ship to ship using up fuel and parts, and getting more fuel and parts from the ships, except the ship parts are FPS. I'm still early in the game, but so far I like it. It's a nice balance between stealth, combat, and running gameplay.
Even now I already understand people complaining that it gets repetitive. But it's a roguelike FPS, so that's kind of the feature. I think you'd like it if you'd like the ritual of running through SS2-like levels for its own sake, and if you like the art and humour all the better.
(...)
Void Bastards is a corridor FPS. You're sneaking or running through halls and rooms of a cramped spaceship like System Shock 2 or Dead Space. If you get to the helm there's a ship map you can access that shows where bad guys are, and from there you're plotting your course to the goods and planning your strategy for taking out the baddies (who are patrolling so they might have moved by the time you get there).
Like others are saying above, one's attitude to the game probably has most to do with one's appreciation of its tone and the whole Hitchhiker's Guide / Terry Gilliam comic routine it has going. I happen to like it, so it works for me. I keep playing it for the reason I mentioned above though, it's like little snippets of randomized space corridor FPS.

The thing that works against the game, is that it really grates on you after a while. I was completely loving it for a good while. By the end, I just wanted it over with.
And then you getting the ending, and you wonder what in the hell the point was.
