VOLGARR!

That video is probably all you need to know.
It's old school. It's hard as shit. It's not permadeath, but rather arcade. You have infinite continues but if you turn the game off you have to start over from the begining next time you start it up. After 4 hours with the game I've managed to make it to the endboss of level 2. There are 7 levels all in all. It's 12 euros on Steam but chances are good that you'll have a -25% coupon for it in your inventory.
There is a lot of trial and error, and you'll have to do many many retries before you get the flow of a level down. Normally I don't like that kind of thing but I'm nonetheless having A BALL with VOLGARR.
Also holy shit what a deluge of great 2D platformers we're having right now. Volgarr came out back in September but I'd never even heard of it until a few days ago. Guess it got overshadowed by Guacamelee, The Swapper and Gunpoint(which I'm also playing right now).

That remind me so much of this:

But with a whole He-Man, Masters of the Universe thing.
Good times!

Good times. :)
Though apparently the game that Volgarr is the most directly based on is (

Also, just made it to level 3! Yay! Then got my ass handed to me and gave up. Boo!

Damn punk kids. Get off my lawn! (It's superficially and substantially similar in a lot of ways. There's also a lot of Ghouls & Ghosts in it and things like that. It's a bit of an arcade hack n slash megamix)
Anyway, I've seen a few videos and none of them yet have even damaged that boss, so good job (and the fact that
That is how you do it and once you even manage to hit the guy it still takes more than a couple of goes to bring him down proves the game is Evil!)

Rastan was an arcade classic, I can't believe you've never heard of it. If Volgarr is anything like that I may have to pick it up.

When I was growing up the nearest arcade hall was a 100 km away and I don't think they had Rastan anyway OK GUYS >:|

Thanks. Since recording that video I've actually managed to beat him, and the entire preceeding level without getting hit once, earning me the Viking Nipples Of Steel achievement! :D Also, according to Global Steam achievements ~40% of players have beaten him, so he's not impossible or anything. The hardest thing about the bosses in this game is staying alive long enough to learn their patterns. And having to play through the entire section to get to them again when you fail to do so. The first boss isn't that hard, his attacks are telegraphed and easy to avoid, but the second boss I'm pretty sure I beat only out of luck. He has area effect attacks that I'm still not sure how to deal with.

Phhht, arcades. I'm pretty sure the primary place I played Rastan was in the lobby of a diner. It was the 80's ffs, games were everywhere.

Yeah I remember playing all the old school games at our shopping center, dentist's office, diner, movie theatre... I don't think I went to an actual arcade until university. And then it was all Virtua Fighter for me... P:mad:-o

Uh, I think the gas station in our town may have had a Street Fighter 2 cabinet at one point. :|
