I always feel that if any social environment gets to the point where you need to mute someone, then the moderation of that environment has already failed.
I dunno, I think it's a pretty sensible option to have. If a user finds themselves being wound up by another poster, having an option simply to not see their content makes life easier for them. It's also less likely to generate flamewars if the material in question simply isn't seen, which in turn makes the life of the moderation team easier.
Also, one person's irritation with another user, to the extent that they end up muting them, may seem irrational when considered by other users. Nobody else may understand why person X needs muting at person Y's insistence, so once again, an ignore option tied to a user's preference is probably the best solution.
I would note however that moderators should
not be able to ignore
any poster, as they could potentially miss harmful material. Like that time early in the life of another forum I visit where industrious, inventive and "mischievous" users* figured out how to force the message board to display pictures in topic headings, resulting in a traumatising panoply of tubgirls and ******s.
By the way, if you are sweet and innocent enough to not know what I refer to in that last sentence, please, DO NOT google those words.
*read "Assholes".
Edit: It's good to see that TTLG automatically censors that last word I posted :)

Game developers just need to hire lots of nihilists. Here is this creative thing I'm pouring my heart into, it expresses nothing, it represents nothing, it stands for nothing.

Not sure if Jason is trolling or... whatever the hell it is he thinks he's doing.

silent majority
Imagine thinking gamers have ever been silent about anything.

And what has Eva done besides offer his opinion, incredibly obnoxious though it may be?

I find it difficult to believe you don't already know the answer to that question.

If you're referring to what I think you are, then that refers to one of TTLG's more storied legends. In the run up to Bioshock, Irrational held a contest for Bioshock fan art, and our own Vigil won (IIRC) with this cool metallic Bioshock logo thing, and then Irrational posted it all over the place as the winner. I was definitely cool looking and all, but if you looked closely enough, it was also clearly an icon-ified version of ... that. And once you saw it you couldn't unsee it. It was one of the best trolls we've ever had. But he really didn't expect to win so it was kind of a throw away joke for him. (Edit: In case you didn't already know the story. Maybe all or most of you do.)
Sorry that's OT, but this topic is already kind of derailing anyway. Looks like we're well in that stage in a game's development where there's not much to talk about so we have to take sides over things we don't even know are in the game or in what way yet.

I've been posting here for years. How did I not know this story?
ZylonBane on 18/6/2019 at 08:17
If memory serves, it didn't actually win, but it was one of the runners-up.

I won't ban people simply for occasionally voicing unpopular opinions, baseless though they may be.
Now if he and some of the other usual suspects started trying to flood the forums with said unpopular opinions, popping into every thread that gave them chance to do so, generally making an all around mess of things in the process, that'd be a different story entirely. I'd be there with the hammer first thing, ready to strike some heads, and all the screaming about the 1st Amendment wouldn't stay my hand. There's only some much political bullshit I expect other people to tolerate, especially on a forum dedicated primarily to videogames.
...but you all know what Evaunit's like. He's full of himself, not nearly as smart as he thinks he is, and will occasionally go off on some weirdo tangent because he's been watching too much of the Youtubes. He doesn't do it often, but he does do it. You can either ignore him, give him a flippant response, then move on, or do the word fight thing up in commchat. For the rest of the time when he's not posting some vapid screed, he does contribute to conversation here.
I see my job primarily as maintaining a smooth flow of conversation. I cannot, nor will not create an environment that assures everyone's sensibilities are forever protected. If I did that, the only person who wouldn't have been permabanned by this point would be Henke.
