hmm, in that case, it's a pretty dumb error. Unless TDS is meant to take place many years after Thief 2...

Maybe the mechanists were a small group of inventors in their early, underground days? Their members being very creative Hammers or something. That's really the only explanation I can think of, but it doesn't really match the Mechanist profile of an aggressive cult of Karras that brings new inventions to the city.

Of course, since the mechanists own Karath-Din, maybe their just looting all the technology from the precursors and reverse-engineering it?

Looking at some of the early concepts, Garrett seemed middle-aged. It's possible TDS was meant to be a decade or so after TMA.:erg:

Maybe it was invented before the Mechanist uprising, while the Hammerite order was whole, and when the Mechanists rose to power, they refered to it as a Mechanist contraption?

Maybe it was already invented, in a cruder form, and the Mechanists perfected them, industrialized their manufacture, and made a rare machine more widely available and known. And shiny.

Or maybe they just botched big time on continuity in TDS?
Might I remind you that TDS has keepers -- an organization built entirely on the concept of indirect manipulation and complete anonymity -- sending assassins out into the open streets with no stealth what so ever to massacre veryone and everything that moves just to find one man. All this on the whimsical claim coming from their leader, a decision of which obviously the membership of the keepers were terribly split on.
If Ion Storm can screw up continuity that bad... then the least of my worries is a minor time line slip up over a viktrola. At the very least the Cradle is the best thing TDS has to offer. Perhaps the only thing TDS has to offer.
I won't even go into how sheepishly they had Garrett willingly running around being the Keeper's lap dog playing fetch... Ugh!

In my opinion I don't think that the Mechanists just popped up after T1. How much time actually passed between T1 and T2? It's been a little while since Iv'e played the games, which is the reason why I ask. I think that the Mechanists have been around for quite some time and in T2 Garret becomes involved in their schemes which leads to him coming into contact with their machines. The machines have most likely been around for awhile. Even in T1 I got the feeling that the world was a primitive steampunk-esque universe.

Karras is called a Hammerite in Thief Gold. The name "Mechanist" is never mentioned. Amazingly, only two years have passed between the first two games. They really did pop up!

As far as the designers needing some new plot line to go with, yeah they did pop up. But in throwing in the viktrola found in the Cradle in TDS I don't think that they destroyed any continuity in the thief history. They worked with ideas that they had come up with and I think that it fits.
