I read in the bank level walkthrough that "their eyes are closed at first". Is that true for all the little bots? Now that I think of it they have seemed pretty stupid at times... When does it tell you this in the game?

Make a noise around one and watch what happens. Their 'eyes' open up (ie, start to glow) and they start LOOKING for you. After they stop being on alert the eyes 'close' once more.

Yeh, they work by sound, you could walk by one in complete light on carpet without it noticing you. Just don't make a sound, else you'll be hearing "FOR KARRAS AND THE BUILDER!" and "Wretched Intruder" etc.

They aren't stupid, they're just workers. They have a programmed path, and a task to do. Their camera is turned on for energy saving, because they can't carry much coal.
Mech-spiders are an exception. They are guards, and their cameras are always on to see the intruder.
If you bump into a worker bot, it will also become alerted and turn on vision. It is interesting that robots can sense touch, but the human guards cannot.

Maybe the Thief world is experiencing a large outbreak of leprosy?
Actually I figure the developers thought humans would get by on their other senses, while the little robots are blind while they're not alerted. Maybe AIs can only handle two senses at once?

I always wondered about the technology used to make those bots. I mean, look how far we've advanced and our most advanced robots can't do most of the stuff the builder's children do. The Precursors must have had some BA tech!

I think that's the law of "If it's cool, we can justify it".

I can understand how they can 'talk' with the wax cylinders (which wear down, fast) but how do they hear, especially comparing your footsteps to that of a guard?

If you want my opinion, Karras was overrated. He owed a lot to the Precursor civilisation of Karath-Din, and it wouldn't surprise me if the builder's children are derived from Precursor technology and a hefty dose of magic.
Still a great bad guy, though. Who'd have thought a bloke who sounds like Droopy the Dog could start up his own religion and gain a bunch of dedicated fanatics to boot?
