Wait... has anyone seen this glitch? - by TheGrimSmile

Right, that's why I said in my original post that it wasn't really a SHAS moment. But it was sudden, and it was a glitch.

Nope, I've never had any level geometry related deaths in T1/2 unless I did something stupid like fall from high ledges. I have however fallen through the ground a number of times in Thief 3 and Deus Ex Invisible War.
One bug I've always wondered about in T1/gold is the following. If you start the game and go into the graphics options and change a setting everything works as it should. If you go into options/video again though, the game will crash immediately. I've seen this happen on all manor of operating systems from Windows 95 to Xp to Linux. It does not happen in T2 though. Can anyone else confirm this?

Yeah, it wasn't leaning around the corner and getting flung causing SHAS, it was physically smashing into the wall at high velocity that killed Garrett. SHAS isn't preceded by anything perceptibly harmful at all.
*snickers* And sometimes its proceeded by something that *appears* harmful and isn't, generally speaking. I think the first time I ever ran into this issue was just after I'd knocked a guard out. I carried the body to some tight corner and dumped it. Then went to run over it right over the outstretched sword and suddenly Garrett screams and falls over. I was so confused, I thought he had impaled himself on the guard's sword! :laff: Of course, when I reloaded and tried to 'recreate' that little effect, it didn't work. I think thats when I came here and read around to figure out what had happened.
I've also experienced the part where you get flung across the room when leaning around a corner and killed when you hit the far wall. Thats a bit shocking too, though at least not *quite* so out of the blue. This bug I've also run into once in TMA when trying to jump on a rope. It didn't kill me that time, just bucked like a wild horse and sent me across the area. Lost most of my health points, though.
But yeah, this sort of bug doesn't hugely surprise me though. I have found in a LOT (most?) of 3d games you hit bugs similar to this. I played Everquest 2 for a few months and it was not that unusual for me to randomly 'fall through the world' and suddenly drop into a freefall. Thankfully they had a built in 'fix' and when the game detected that it would teleport you back to a 'safe' area (usually further back than I had been, but at least I could go back to playing), with Guild Wars, every so often I can run through the cliffs or rocks a ways, before they suddenly solidify around me. At one point I actually went to cross a bridge and fell through to the rocks below it. Yet when you return to the area, the glitch never happens again.
I am guessing this is the same 'type' of thing as happens with these glitches in Thief. Only in Thief there's more 'environmental' ways to die, whereas in these other games you can usually only die from actual enemy damage. So it causes more trouble for the player. ALthough, getting stuck and dying suddenly aren't really any worse, either way you'll end up having to reload to continue.
But yeah, as far as I can tell 3d environments run into these random glitches, no matter what engine is running it.

I don't think SHAS can be fixed or avoided in any way. Luckily, it's pretty rare.

DX I take a long time to respond, sorry...
Yes, Shadowriku, that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. There is nothing very sudden about Garrett dying in that way...
In fact, as mentioned, you can prolong his life by "jumping" a bit out of the floor, but Garrett does eventually die...
jtr, I don't suppose you could get a video of this glitch you found? XP It would be interesting to see...
Thanks for all the help, peeps!

If it's the getting stuck and eventually immobile glitch...nope. It's only happened once and I played around in that area several times before and after.
If it's a true SHAS, then maybe... I'll see. I know the version I played back then was unpatched and I only have the patched version. I've also never experienced the broken stair SHAS...yet.:ebil:
Here's Poesta's recorded SHAS, but it's the first time I've seen one where he doesn't KRNCH!AAAAAAAHHHHGH!!! He just falls over like he had no breath.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but after finding a Speedrunner throught the video thread on here, I was looking through his videos and found an example of the occurrence. I hope it'll make more sense.

At the very end, he starts sinking down. It doesn't show the rest, but I presume he dies. This would make it seem like you don't have to wait for a long time, but just get stuck somewhere.
