Uhm, since this is my first post on this forum, I would like to say "hello all DeusEx fans".
Well, the pleasantries are now concluded.
I have heard plenty of good things about DE, but nothing much specific. I only know it is a futuristic RPG/FPS fusion similar to SS2. Since this is a genre I like, I'd like to buy it, but need some help.
Can somebody please fill me in? Something about the plot, settings, gameplay details?
I will be much grateful. If somebody will convince me, well, one more happy DE fan will be posting here!

I heard there's a Game Of The Year Edition coming out in May. I'm not sure if it's worth waiting for though, nobody seems to have any information on it.

Welcome along Shrieker and Lobster (I have replied to your GOTY query in your thread Lobster)!
Shrieker, Deus Ex is indeed a futuristic RPG/FPS/Adventure game fusion which many people compare to SS2. However, while certain aspects of gameplay and layout may be familiar to SS2 players, DE is its own game. And a very good one at that. It's set in the not too distant future when the Earth has become a world of shady conspiracies. If you can imagine every conspiracy theory you ever heard in the XFiles and multiply that by 2 you might come close.
You play a secret agent type character called J.C. Denton who works for a government agency known as UNATCO. The plot is very rich and detailed and as labyrinthine as they come. The gameplay is a mix of straight out action (with a range of weapons and other methods of taking out the bad guys) and sneaking around avoiding detection. It's also vital to talk to people and interact to find out information and get clues as to how to proceed.
One thing many people comment on is that there are a variety of ways to approach every single situation in Deus Ex. Need to get past a guard aren't much good in a firefight? No problem, just hack into the security computer and set the turrets on him. As you progress in the game you'll be awarded skill points and you can use these to add to your skills (of which there are many, from heavy weapons to lockpicking to swimming). You'll also find special augmentations which you can use to help you in your missions.
Overall, it's an excellent game. Truly deserving of all the awards it has won and one of the best games I've ever played. If only my brief summary could do it justice. Try gamespy or something for links to better reviews. Enjoy it!

I wish I was a Deus Ex newbie again! The feelings i had when i first played this game were magical! The second and third times weren't too shabby either. Trust the people who say that Deus Ex is a fabulous game...don't trust those who say DX is a poor quality game(they are lying) You'll enjoy DX more than any other game ever! Best Game Ever!!!

While it is like SS2 in some ways, I like Deus Ex MUCH more. I got tired of SS2 after about getting halfway through it. DX is not like that...I just keep going. The plot, action, and variance in gameplay makes it a truly outstanding game. I'm a Thief person, so I like to be a little sneaky...but I'm kind of modifying that to stealth/pick 'em off from a distance stuff. Very cool.

one thing i really like about deus ex and thief (as opposed to ss2) is the NPC interactions. there are "real people" in those games, ones which you interact with (and usually thump or stun/tranq). i missed them in ss2 ... mostly because i was running for my life or soiling my pants.
in that game you are *alone* and HUNTED. scary sh**.
