Hello all!
I just finished Thief 2. It's been, maybe 10 years since I first did it. Boy, I think I will always love it. The atmosphere, the engine, it all goes so well together.
To the chase: I want to try map building, and also to play the fan missions! I have to patch the game up, dont I? This Thief 2 copy I got from Steam; is it patched to 1.18? I'm a complete jackass tweaking and patching games. Explain it like you would to a child, haha!
Help please! I really want to keep on playing. That thread FM listing by types is like a candystore to my eyes!

Start here with this sticky in Thief Gen Discussion. That will get your install all nice and shiny and modern. In a nut shell about a year or so ago somebody got into the game's code and performed many updates that have improved the game's performance immensely.
If you get around to Thief 1 or Thief Gold there are updates as well. Look for the T1 sticky in the same forum.
So good luck and when/if you get stuck at a particular point just bump this thread with questions. Somebody will be along before you know it to set you straight.

You mean,
update with the tafferpatcher, then use, say, the darkloader, perhaps?
But this step-by-step, looks like instructions to dismantle the game! No such thing as a automatic installer, huh? :(

It's actually a very straightforward procedure.
Since you have Thief 2 on Steam I imagine it's already installed. All you have to do is get the latest version of Tafferpatcher and run it. It will install something we call "NewDark", which is an unofficial patch for Thief 1 and 2 that tremendously improves the engine and makes life a lot easier for players and modders alike. Tafferpatcher also includes some optional stuff like hi-res skies. Once you have done this, all you need to do is either use the built-in mission loader to play FMs, or download another mission loader (the most used is DarkLoader 4.3). After you've done this, you're all set.
If you want to do the same for Thief 1/Gold, then you need to download TFix, which is essentially Tafferpatcher but for Thief 1/Gold.

Yes! I feel like an ass now, but a sucessful ass! Easy as pie, downloaded the 200mg tafferpatch, did it, dled the darkloader, and i've done the first FM! All for a nights sleep! THank you so!
I'd like to say two things.
-a compliment to the FM listing by type. it makes me drool. really. although some links dont work, namely the keepofmetalandgold.com ones.
- and on all the guides i've passed through, i did not see anything regarding STEAM. I know it doesn't get in the way of installing, but it should be minimally considered.
