I don't even know all that much about him, or if I'm spelling his name right. But it cracks me up when I hear Ukranians chanting it on tv for some reason. Go democracy though, it's the worst form of government except for all the others.

Yuschenko was obviously the one in charge, so it seems more likely to me that the president has more power in Ukraine. Also, what the hell is with people referring to Ukraine as "the" Ukraine?

It's like 'the Sudan' and 'the Gambia'. "I live in Ukraine" just doesn't run off the English (British?) tongue, I suppose.

[Edit: From the CIA World Factbook: Country name: conventional long form: Republic of the Sudan. Similarly for the Gambia. The same entry just gives 'Ukraine' for <s>the</s> Ukraine, though. Hrm.]

The United States formal name is not "States." Calling it "the states" refers to the plurality of its political sub-entities. Your example = FAIL.
