I'm not playing Wasteland 2 yet, since I'm still busy with Divinity: Original Sin (and I have an appointment with The Cat Lady afterwards), but I would think there are a few people here who are playing it.
And while I don't have any impressions of my own, I have a question for those of you who are playing Wasteland 2 or who played the first game. At a glance it seems pretty similar to Fallout in terms of setting and tone, perhaps without the heavy '50s Americana but with more of a Western thing going. How do the two IPs/game worlds compare? How do they differ?

I'd say you pretty much nailed it. Fallout has its 50's post-apocalyptic kitsch going on, while Wasteland leans more heavily towards a futuristic Wild West. You don't have ghouls, supermutants, or any of the other extreme radiation mutations like you did in Fallout. Yeah, you do run across the occasional animal mutant (giant honey badgers), but they're more there for flavor, than a big focus of the world. Rather, it's more about technology going awry, sentient robots, and people going crazy, feral, and cruel.
Overall, it's pretty damn awesome.
edit: I should also add that it's pretty buggy in places, but hell...that just adds to the oldschool charm. TROIKA LIVES!

Fallout was conceived as a Wasteland sequel, but they couldn't get the IP.

I'm going to hang fire until it's good an patched, but I'm champing at the bit and I never even played the original.

Probably the best idea. Every game these guys make needs at least one patch before they're perfectly playable. Not that WL2 is the worst I've seen, but I have had a few little goofups and a couple of random CTDs creep up on me.
One thing I want to add that makes me like WL2 better than FO, at least as far as setting goes, is that there's actual foliage around. It's not all endless miles of brown, blasted deserts and dead trees. I've been to a few places that were nice and green, in a scrub growth sorta way. And from what I hear, California is nothing but vast sprawl of overgrown cities. Fallout was a great game and all, but it could've used some variety in scenery.

It has a lot of 80s influences going on with a strong Mad Max vibe -- Fallout didn't have gangs that were quite as crazy and there's a bit more nastiness overall. Also, there's a lot more stuff dealing with androids and robots -- and they are not those quirky 50s-60s robots like in Fallout. It's a little less serious, though, with killer rabbits and mutated wildlife and quirky pop culture references. More FO2 than FO1 in this regard, I'd say. Oh and also tons of WL1 lore.

Yeah Renz - I've found that a lot of indie / early access / KS games I've leapt into have left me cold due to the feeling of being unfinished and/or too rough around the edges. My free time / gaming backlog ratio isn't favourable to making multiple runs at stuff, so I prefer to wait until the time is right. One notable example is Stardrive, a 4X space game which should have been my favourite thing ever, but after a certain point in the game's progression, just stops dead, like they ran out of money or something. They may have finished it now, but I'm loathe to jump in until I know for sure it's a final version.

Unfinished? Hardly. It's about as complete and meticulously detailed a game as you can get. It's just that, much like in the past, games of this scope tend to be pretty buggy. It's dealing with 500,000 moving parts at any given moment, and it should come as no surprise when one or two get looked over, even after a heavy, widespread beta period.
It's a little flaky on occasion, and could use a patch to smooth out the bumps, but I'd hardly call it rushed and roughshod. In fact, it's very quickly becoming one of my favorite games.

I wasn't commenting on Wasteland 2 - I haven't played it - just stating how I've been burned before, so am now in the habit of waiting until all wrinkles have been ironed out.

I wrote that in a rush, and it came out sounding different than what I intended.
And now here I am in another rush, fixing my previous mistake. What I mean to say is that this game doesn't feel like a half assed, half done, beta quality, rushed Kickstarter project (which, admittedly, I've only heard about. All the KS backed games I've been looking forward to have turned out pretty good thus far).
Also fuck honey badgers.
