Yes, my fine feathered friends, 14 years after the last mainstream FF was released for the PC - FF8, which was the
worst one - PC folk (
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-09-18-final-fantasy-13-series-is-coming-to-pc) will now get FF XIII, which is the
second-worst one. Truly an embarrassment of riches! Or just an embarrassment, really.
I have FF XIII on the PS3. I remember wanting to punch some people in the face, a helium-voiced airhead that I wished would just die, a main character so woodenly stoic and characterless that I despaired at her being in any way fun to play until she punched someone in the face, after which she'd outlived her usefulness and then I wished she would just die, and something to do with ice and a motorcycle. Also, I think there was a story. I'm relatively certain there was an attempt at one, but in grand latter-day FF tradition, it's a hodge-podge, a melange, a... fucking
mess.
Now, PC users can experience all those emotions and more, only a mere 5 years after I did! Such nice! So good! Much excite!
Bring out your cumfaces! :o
*Oh, and those gorgeous cutscenes will probably only make the download about 32-40 GB. The price of next-gen gaming, eh what.

Can giant swords and the power of emo friendship save Eorzea from the forces of turned-based statistical mayhem?
Watch this movie and find out.

What was bad about FFVIII again? I played it when I was about 16 and enjoyed it enough to have bought it on sale in Steam a little while back.
Did I do bad?

I think it got a bad rap because of changing the formula following the ones that preceded it, and just not standing up relative to them the way it fell in line.
Or this random quote I found:
Quote:
Most reviews in the US were only mildly positive and bemoaned that the iconic characters of Final Fantasy VII had been replaced with a group of sensitive teenagers, while a 2006 poll in Japanese gaming bible Famitsu revealed that Final Fantasy VIII was only the sixth most popular installment of the series. More grudgingly liked than truly loved, it’s the red-headed stepchild of the franchise.
Looking at it in isolation, people still find things they liked about it. So I think your comment makes sense.
Of course my favorite Final Fantasy has always been Anachronox.

Anachronox would have been so much better if not for the tedious combat.

VIII nixed a lot of tried and true, perfectly fine game systems and replaced them with grindy, unfun bollocks.
Story-wise? Very much YMMV. Out all of the FFs that I've played FF VI was the only real stand-out and even that is pretty average as far as writing quality goes IMO.

That's why the patch that allows you to drastically speed up combat and travelling is almost essential in my opinion.
