Then they changed it in Thief Gold, because it works for sure. For an example scroll to 5:00 (]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt2RJPiUGHo) here It even demonstrates jumping on the spot, althoug the guard can't hear it in this case. If you start at 4:50 you'll also see a weird glitch :P
