Just select the mode from the multiplayer screen, and hope there's someone with the smartphone app willing to play along.
In my PS4 version I notcied some of the modes (like Race) require PS Plus though. Looks like Sony is more and more trying to get a XBox Gold-like thing going, where you have to pay a monthly fee for multiplayer. DONT WANT >:|

Sounds like another reason to get the PC version, besides those people mucking around with mods.

I've always heard that PS+ is worth its weight in gold with the various free games that come with it though, but I do get that making it quasi mandatory is a bad practice.

Naah, WD is the kinda game I wanna play with a gamepad, from the comfort of my livingroom recliner. (also my PC is getting a bit long in the tooth)
I've yet to see a game on PS+ that I haven't already played but want to play. This month for PS4 it's Trine 2 (already played) and Pixeljunk Shooter (eeeehhh).

Don't dismiss PixelJunk Shooter henke! It's a really good little game, with some neat fluid physics modelling.

Thirded. If you liked the mud physics in Spintires, you might get a similar kick out of Pixeljunk Shooter - apart from which it oozes idiosyncratic style like all the Pixeljunk games.

Well, hell, alright. :) I'll use that 14 day PS+ trial near the end of the month and grab this months freebies, and whatever comes up next month.
