I can see why you'd be disappointed.

I can confirm that your art teacher was bullshitting you, it's like learning music after 15, it's clearly not as easy and immediate but it can be learned as long as you have a good eye/ear, perceive exactly what you want to perceive, reproduce what you want to reproduce, have a strong opinion about what you like/don't like, etc.
That being said, the drawings you're showing aren't good at all. The shading isn't bad, but you've got to put a lot of attention into geometry, shapes, proportions and perspective. Much better than many well-known webcomics, though :]

The first ones are absolutely atrocious but the upside down thing is actually good. I think you're confining yourself too much by trying perfectly naturalistic pen drawings. This is hard as fuck, man.
My suggestion would be to get a bunch of bright colours and start doing impressionism. Because...It's a lot more fun! And more forgiving than those pen drawings. Mainly though it keeps you going because it's fun to do.
Incidentally I visited a site yesterday, quite by chance, that I used to read a lot back in the nineties and it's still there. You should look at it. (

Well yeah, I just started a month ago. I'm not expecting me to be anything but awkward at it.
edit: I like how you keep editing it to soften the BRUTAL BLOW TO MY SELF ESTEEM! Don't worry, I'm not bothered by it. I know they're bad, but I'm still on my shaky first steps here.
If I haven't improved at all in 8 months, then I'll be concerned. :P

The guy obviously knows classical drawing though. Saying "hey look at those you could try to do the same they are easier" when in fact they require eye and technique that have been put through the prism of classical education is not fair at all.

Right. As far as I know, there's really no such thing as easy art anyone can do with only a minimal amount of practice. It's all varying degrees of difficulty that requires a good bit of knowledge to do well.

It was meant as an inspiration, nothing else. :) (Also "put through the prism" haha, oh god.)

Go to hell :) That's how we say things 'round here.

Yeah, I know. But right now I'm sticking to the book, and it's got me to the point where I'm doing nothing more complicated than line and contour drawing. If I can't do that, I can't do anything. My experiments with shading were are just a little aside I went through when I figured out that rubbing on my pencil scribblings with my fingers produced a nice effect I've always wanted to replicate, and I decided to play with it a bit.

My friend's first efforts weren't that great either! Practice makes perfect an' all that.
