Look around for a pair of sliding doors in the last room, they may be open, they may not be. Once you find them, haul ass inside and grab the item you find. After that, the elementals won't be any more trouble . . .

Francine: Did you find this one?
12. In an alcove above the stairs near the sliding puzzle.

Finished it on Expert.
IMO, the best Water Contest mission and one of the best Thief FMs of all times with the best technical innovations I've seen for a looong time. Atmosphere and graphics were excellent too.

Climb down the stairs?
There should be a room at the bottom with a door at the far side. It opens as you approach. IIRC it was a little hard to see because of the darkness down there?

As impressed as I was with the technical side of this mission , I was simply glad to finish it . Having the fire elementals re spawn while trying to find out what the f^&% was going on with the shape changing corridors was simply over the top . Regardless of the reason , slowdowns or crashes are simply not good . I booted into Windows for the first time in a month to play these missions ( after installing a patch to fix Microsofts last failed patch )and what do you know - Thief crashes . I don't understand , with the amount of time invested in these things , why someone wouldn't have beta tested to small extent of simply loading a saved game .
On the plus side the sounds ,textures, and effects ( cracking walls , rising water , new elementals ) were absolutely without par . The motion sensing spikes , especially over the open pits were really well done . I suppose that bringing out new stuff is part of the purpose of these contests . It would be nice to have all this wizardry in the perfection of a multi-author mission .

There was only one fire elemental, it just seemed like more. The corridors did not "change shape", you were simply rotated 180 degrees, which was very disorientating but bloody clever once you had it sussed. Try playing it again.
I'm sure it was beta tested. Until you try and do a contest mission yourself, you cannot understand the pressure authors are under... and to produce something like this... just incredible.
I'm sure other authors can use all of the above as the author is a generous soul.

I know I doused more than one elemental inbetween save/reload/crashes .

The point I was making was that there was only one fire elemental but the mission design made you think there were more. It respawned of course!
Go back to the room where you found one above the stairs and walk through the invisible doorway...and up the ladder. In this room you will find a small hallway you will have to crawl through.
Bigger Hint:
At the end of the hall, this is a crawl space that leads you out to the big room with the dead person..it is possible to climb about the ledges and there is a switch nearby.
