look for an underwater glyph.Oh oh. I think I'm on the wrong side of things. I'm in the area of the valve contol offices and can't get back to the
water area
which is on the other side of the gates where I am.
Yandros on 16/10/2006 at 16:56
How did you get to the valve control office without opening the gates??
ffox on 16/10/2006 at 16:58
OK I think I know where you are now. :)
There are levers beside the "Two Guards" notices on the west walls of the two control rooms. You have 5 seconds to flip them both.

I think I remember just walking through them while they were still closed. It must have been a bug because I remember thinking that it was weird when it happened. I continued with the game and didn't think about it till now.
ffox: are
those levers
on the side I'm at, specifically the side where the Hammers were waiting? That's the side I'm on.
Yandros on 16/10/2006 at 17:14
Well, it sounds like you found a bug and got past something the easy way; you shouldn't have to backtrack through them now unless you're hunting for loot.
Have you drained the reservoir in Sector 14? How far into Sector 15 are you? What's got you stuck now?
bobber on 16/10/2006 at 17:26
Playing on normal I have just two objectives left:
open the double doors and escape via Sector 9
I found the exit ok but the mission won't end untill I get those doors open.
I'll check it out again and see if I can finish it correctly.
Thanks!

Well I'm just about through with this mission. Its pretty good. Though I am now (minorly) stuck trying to figure out how to get past the
haunts in the crypt.
I've got the
medallion, I've got the key, I've got the Holy water, and am hanging on a ladder above them, but they keep seeing me and shooting me down.
Ugh.
Over all its been a good mission. The sheer number of new things and changed things is staggering. The author has done an amazing job with this mission. Its almost sad there's not a full series to go with it.
My only 'gripe' would be 'Garrett' when he speaks. Whoever has done his voice did a good job getting 'close' to the original. . . but its not quite right and its off enough to really grate on me. Too much emotion in his voice when he talks - the original tended to only hint at being rattled, instead of sounding definite about it, etc. Without that I'd have to do a double take to see whether or not it was the original, though. There was another fan mission I started that had someone doing the voice too and it was the same way. Bit too much emotion to be heard, but in the shorter phrases, very hard to tell if you were hearing the original voice or not.
Also the introduction of him using modern day swear words was a real turn off. One of the things I like about thief is that it did not have any swearing in it - unless you count 'taff', which is hardly a modern day colloquialism, so it doesn't count. But sh** does and it sort of ruined the mission for me.
And before someone gets all het up about that, let me explain. I do not use swear words like that myself in real life. I can't exactly escape them - even in my own home you hear people standing on the street using bad language as if they are too stupid to realize there's a whole language out there with which to express their feelings. To me it is a mark of being under-educated and too dimwitted to say what you really want to say. There are plenty of words out there without using things that don't even make SENSE when they are broken down and/or translated. Not to mention just being plain disgusting. I prefer to watch movies that do not contain swearing, play games that do not etc. For me its a real turn off to products that use these. So finding a game that deals with things such as Thief yet uses no swearing is a nice thing for me and its irksome when I run across a mission that suddenly adds it in.
And please note that this is my opinion, and mine alone. If you happen to differ with me (and you probably do! Most people do.) there is no need to jump on me because I am expressing an unpopular view. I'm not stopping anyone from doing what they like, just expressing why I do not like things. :)
Oddly, made up swear words do not bother my sensibilities.
As for the voting, its going to be a tough call. I *really* liked TotT, but this one is very good too (except for the voice/swear word issue). A lot of work clearly went into this. I don't suppose anyone would appreciate a tie? :) And I must say - transparent undead? Nasty nasty!! Its so much worse trying to get around when you aren't sure if you are seeing them or not, and have trouble locating them.

I'm not going to bash you for feeling that way, you're welcome to have your opinion. I find profanity laughable when used in excess (i.e. more than a few times in a mission), but one use at a climatic moment doesn't go over the line IMO (you're of course free to disagree).
SlyFoxx is pretty much the de facto voice actor for Garrett these days. Loanstar voiced Garrett on older FMs, but Sly has been doing it for years now, and I think does a great job considering how good an actor Stephen Russell is, and how hard he can be to imitate. And I imagine Sly's higher degree of emotion is more at the direction of the author in most cases than his own conscious decision to be expressive.

I resent that Russ. I've never made a conscious decision in my life! Oh wait...damn it! That didn't come out right.:o

It is a matter of opinion. :) And I guess as we're all happy to disagree, its all good.
And yes, I do agree - Slyfoxx is it? - has done a fabulous job, considering he is not the original voice actor. I don't suppose anyone but the original can do it quite the same for obvious reasons. I'm not faulting the quality of the job done at all. Just the . . . passion-emotion used for this particular character.
Ironically if I had never heard Stephen Russel's version I probably would not have a quibble. lol And indeed, it could just be because I am a person who does not take to change well, and this is a change. Not necessarily a bad one, but that doesn't seem to matter much to me until I get used to it.
Is there a story-reason why Garrett would suddenly be showing so much more emotion, though? Just curious. :)
