in the hidden keeper room just inside sector 13, the green glyph opens a short hidden passage that leads to a dead end.

This was a bug that never got fixed in the final release, the first half of the line isn't played. The whole thing was supposed to be: "
That looks like the glyph of concealment... and that explains why they used it."

No, those are the Hammers battling undead in the streets of the Old Quarter above ground as you move through the sewers.

@Sticky: No, I see them fine, but they may have been down when you posted. Availability of my domain has been flaky lately.

I'm pretty sure that line played correctly for me.
Excellent mission, easily one of my favourites. It was quite tricky and had me stumped at times, but I'm glad to say I figured out each step before the puzzling turned to frustration and I completed the mission without having to resort to external help - all the clues were in there and the logic was clear (in my experience, that's rare among complex/ambitious FMs). Best example of noir-type visuals I've yet seen, and the sparing use of colour to signify certain things was excellent. In the past, I generally haven't been keen on undead-type missions nor have I been much of a "ghost" player (excuse the pun) but this one totally won me over on both counts (I know the ghost wasn't forced, but I set out to conserve gear and just ended up playing the whole thing without combat). I really, really enjoyed this mission. :thumb:

Thanks to both of you.
I suppose it's time to come clean about this mission while the thread is back up here again. I always wanted to do an update, to realize my full original vision without the contest limitations, and also, very importantly, to resolve the aspects of this mission which conflict with Thief canon. Also, while many folks seem to enjoy the mostly greyscale noir atmosphere, (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109046&p=1504613) others did not, so I've considered making an update full colour, or at least muted full colour. But I've never had time to do any of this.
So this year, I tried to make an update in time for Halloween this Friday, but gave up a few weeks ago due to lack of time. I didn't want to rush it or do it half-assed, since I'll only ever update it once.
However, I've been working and planning with a small team of brilliant folks (jtr7 and Peter Smith off and on for two years, and more recently Nickie and Tannar) on what adjustments to the story should be made to both bring it in line with canon and also refresh things so it isn't just a gussied-up remake. I'm glad to say that with their help (and only with their help), I've achieved that goal and we have a nice plan in place which is quite a departure from the original mission, but maintains its spirit. There won't be much of a cosmetic facelift - v2 will instead focus on revising the story and gameplay elements (and fixing a few bugs).
Now the only thing left to do is find the time to bring it to life.
Death's Cold Embrace is my primary focus and will remain so, but I'll spend a day or two here and there working on
What Lies Below v2, and it will be released some day. Maybe Halloween 2010...

I'm really happy to hear that Yandros. What Lies Below has long been one of my favorite missions and I'm thrilled that you are working on a version 2. Personally, I think the "noir" theme worked very well and is a large part of what makes this mission so atmospheric. One with muted colors would probably work too. In any case, can't wait to play it again! :thumb:

Thanks! Although I'd have to say it won't be like playing it again. :)
Maybe I need to name it something other than WLBv2...

tho i am one of the ones that liked the grayscale! ;)
was right atmosphere to me, also it added emphasis to the BOO! factor of the pop up surprises with the red light when you entered some rooms! :thumb:
(had me preping my jump muscles every time i went thru a door!!!) :cheeky:

That is great news, Yandros - a "full-blown" version of What Lies Below...yummm :D
But don't go overdoing it, man. (Rose Cottage, DCE, DP3... :cheeky: )
