After a few years of inactivity, (
http://pitchfork.com/news/41438-the-white-stripes-call-it-quits/) one of my favorite bands has officially called it quits.
Not exactly the most earth shattering news of the day, but they were one of the more important bands of the 2000's and did record
Elephant, widely considered to be one of the best rock albums of the past decade. And while they were clearly at least a good five years or so past their creative fire-spitting peak, they managed to keep up the quality and relevance until the very end;
Icky Thump dominated the charts as much as they ever did and contained its fair share of scorchers.
So until the inevitable Coachella reunion, adieu.

Speaking of bands, what happened to your band, Stitch? I know it broke up, but I never heard anything more than what your ancient PolyP site says. The last thing you posted there was something like "Update coming soon," and that was a few years ago. Might want to let your fans know that you didn't get hit by a truck or something. Just make a final update saying something like, "Hey folks, got sick of updating the site now that the band's gone. So long and thanks for all the fish."
I've been listening to "Filthy F" and "Love Stain" again. Something in those two songs (especially the latter) really stood out to me, and still does after all those years. I told a friend that I suspected that you had died, until I happened to stumble across a recent post of yours here.

:(
I'd count Icky Thump as one of their better albums, so it really feels like this is coming out of nowhere. But if they feel like there's nothing more they could do together that would live up to the White Stripes name, so be it. None of Jack's sideprojects have been nearly as good as White Stripes either(unless we count the Loretta Lynn album he produced).

I've had such mixed feelings about White Stripes. They're obviously not my kind of music, but it's impossible to deny their impact. I guess I value them for simply being different during a period of music history where it was virtually impossible to do so, at least in terms of mainstream recognition. It's always a bit of a loss when a band like that goes away.

One of my fave bands, and they rocked live. I loved Jack's dedication to his music, and his constant experimentation with new sounds. Also, if you've never seen the documentary It Might Get Loud, do so, it's amazing - basically Jack, The Edge and Jimmy Page hanging out and jamming.
I thought last I'd heard that they were going to put out one last album and tour and then call it quits, but they must have just decided there wasn't anything left in the tank. As far as Jack's other projects, I really dig both Raconteurs albums, although it took me a while.

Never been what you'd call a dyed in the wool fan, but I loved Elephant and many other singles.
Um, RIP...?

Loved them and all they stood for. Icky Thump is my favourite album so it's quite sad there'll be no more but at least we have all the others!

After Elephant I always loved their John Peel sessions the most, very stark, energetic and unpolished.

Always loved the Stripes, but can't say I've ever been too keen on Jack's side projects.
I will follow Meg's future career with interest :erg:
