Speed? Who told you there was speed in the game? We only have beer, c....
Oh. Wait. Sorry.
Here goes. So far ALL of my answers have been preened directly from press demos and from public conversations that dev team members have had with the press. Sticking to that criterion will keep me from overstepping my bounds as a nosy network tech, so if I don't give you straight answers to some stuff, it might be because I haven't heard it said outside this office. End caveat.
Player speed: I probably shouldn't say much about this. I definately shouldn't mention anything about it being flexible (well beyond the run/walk distinction) or how the player's speed impacts the perceptions other NPC's have of him....That would get me in serious hot water.
Physics: Hmm....Define the difference between "good" and "bad" physics.
I would argue that part of the reason the press on the game so far has been vague about intricate physics details is that one of the major goals of the interface was and is intuitive understanding of play. The physical model is realistic but not obsessively so. It's subtle, and possibly therefore hard to define. It is also possible that you will all play the game and think to yourselves, "That crackpot should stick to network cabling."
I think what I'm trying to say is that I haven't played this game at any stage and thought, "Wow. The way that the heat from a hyper-velocity 30.06 tracer-round leaves an after-image on my night-sight reticle for a brief second is indicative of excruciating attention to detail. And the flocking AI for the bird models is very well thought-out, especially as concerns their group response to disturbance/stimuli."
It's more like, "Eat my long-range death, NWO puppet! What the hell scared those pigeons? Is someone behind me?!" Next it's the ka-click of a slide locking into place and the fit hitting the shan.
I wrote a short article that speaks to a lot of these questions (actually it was a syllabus for one of Warren's press demos and therefore may be fair game) and if I can find it, I'll post it somewhere. Fair?

That would be very cool if you could find and post that article.
And we certainly wouldn't want you to get in trouble for telling us details about character creation/developement/advancement, or about some of the types of nonlethal weapons, or anything like that.

Talk about a highly anticipated game...
MIS Monkey, how unique is this game? Do you feel it sets a new standard, like Thief has? With Thief as a first person sneaker, what would you call this game?
And does solving the mystery (or getting to the bottom of the -alleged- conspiracies) affect replayability dramatically?
Fraek on 17/1/2000 at 03:39
Well just from my knowledge of playing fallout a game that is somewhat similar in playability and character creation... even though I knew the story (which also had a major part in this game as well) I still wanted to play through again as a different character type to see the different skills. I must have replayed the start about 5 times, played to the middle at least 3 times, and played 3/4 the way 2 times.

OK, so here's what happened. I found the article and I was re-writing it when it suddenly became a useful document to other parts of the company (conspiracy?) so now it's an internal doc. Which I'm flattered by, mind you. So it's back to answering questions 1 by 1. And don't forget that Bob White will be answering questions over in UU.
- thief was a first person sneaker; what would you call this game?
I wouldn't call it a FP-Sneaker, unless you like sneaking and that's how you want to play. I wouldn't call it a FP-Shooter for the same reason. Warren usually spits out something like, "Immersive spy-thriller simulation" There's a whole thread in here dedicated trying to classify this game as either an RPG in the first person, or a first-person-action game with RPG elements. I know it's going to be easier to sell if it can be described in a five-words-or-less simile, (The-thinking-man's-Halflife; An-Xfiles-meets-James-Bond-Sim; Like-DXXXXXXXX-but-cool; Spector's-newest-genre-buster) but I'm not going to be the one do to it. The point, as I understand it, is that it will be whatever game you want it to be. If you want to go in guns blazing, do it. If you want to sneak and spy, do it. If you want to play interrogator, do it. If you wanna be a badazz hacker wit mad icebreakin skeelz, (you know the rest)...Pick a character and run with it.
-Does solving the mystery...affect replayability?
Do I look like I want to lose my job?
Non-lethal weapons - (I'm deliberately being obtuse) A gun is a non-lethal weapon if you can't shoot it very well.
That's enough for now. I gotta review some of these surveillance tapes before I call the authori-TAYs
Fraek on 23/1/2000 at 02:04
Hahah, don't even try to play Everquest if you had the same problem with Fallout... I must have tried about 20 different class/race combos and got to level 6-10 on most of them.

Hmmm... so MIS Monkey; so the player speed affects NPC perceptions hey?
So is that as in :"WTF was that?" as you blur past - or is it "Hmmm... I that guy is too fast. He must be cyber enhanced..." or is it "Heh that guy is slow and pathetic - think I'll shot him."??
If only someone would make a good game based on the cyberpunk genre. :sigh:
