Why didn't they understand the wicked plan of Karras?
There's at least one readable at Soulforge about a person that notices the change in Karras. But what about the others? Couldn't they see the obvious? Couldn't they read the New Scripture and understand the plan?

Maybe most of them were too brainwashed and obedient to notice anything. :erg:

Yes... That was my first thought, too...
And in Deadly Shadows we have the same old city - with Hammerites, Pagans, no machines, no robots...

This is how a sect works IRL - the leader is glorified to the point of being viewed as a deity. The majority of the cult could not doubt him, it would be too blasphemous for them.

There are a few conversations where one Mechanist voices a doubt or query, and the other one threatens to report them. And if people think everyone around them is committed to the cause, private doubts are likely to remain private.

People believe what they want to believe and shut there eyes and ears to what they don't. Once in a while, one of them would have some doubt but their doubt would be small compared to their belief.

I think it's just like modern day Islam. (Which is the same as the 7th century Islam) They have this scripture that clearly encourages oppression, prejudice and bigotry to a point where it threatens the entire world. The only differences are that the mechanists don't oppress women and their scripture praises technology (In a wrong way), where Islam works against technological progress.
As long as the congregation lives in the delusion that scripture is a direct message from god, they will destroy society if that is what it requests.

Oh, adapting my last Buddhism teacher's Buddhism teacher's words, I'd say that I fear for every sentence begining with "THE Islam..." to become completely wrong. Things, especially religions, are far too complex for something like that. But before we go deeper in that, I'd say there is even diversity within the Mechanist order/religion.
What about the Mechanists dreaming of the same goal as Karras?
