The Mechanists were too fanatical to question their leader. Karras was undoubtly insane, and he dragged his sect along with him. So the word "blind" is much better for the Mechanists than "silly".

Yes... That was my first thought, too...
And in Deadly Shadows we have the same old city - with Hammerites, Pagans, no machines, no robots...
The last bit about your moaning of TDS has nothing to do with the discussion of the Mechanists.

Ah, but what if the Hammers created holy water on their own? What if the Master Builder was simply an ancient chemist/architect?
I'm pretty sure holy water is... water, though? Just blessed through a ceremony, not a solution of some sort.

OP, look up David Koresh or Jim Jones. In cults people will do anything if the leader is charismatic enough and they desperately need faith to give their lives meaning.

I think it's just like modern day Islam. (Which is the same as the 7th century Islam) They have this scripture that clearly encourages oppression, prejudice and bigotry to a point where it threatens the entire world. The only differences are that the mechanists don't oppress women and their scripture praises technology (In a wrong way), where Islam works against technological progress.
As long as the congregation lives in the delusion that scripture is a direct message from god, they will destroy society if that is what it requests.
There's so many idiotic interpretations in that are so worthy of FOX News that i'm not going to bother saying anything about it except that without Islamic caliphates sponsoring scholars there'd be no modern medicine or mathematics. Islam doesn't 'Work against technological progress' or any other scientific progress.
Ignorance is the only thing we have to fear.
Anyway, this isn't the place for that debate.

Yes, they all really do beg to be killed, and sometimes say thank you if you take them down.
All the Mechs Servants says these same words. It seems it is a very painfull path, we don't know precisely why, if it's physical pain or mental stress.

Call it my own twisted theory but perhaps Karras became a victim of his own experiments? Brain damage due to chemical exposure (in producing new technology) causing hallucinations? That's my take on it. As for the dedication of his followers, when you consider they came from a basically medieval environment and plunged into modern day technology thanks to his genius-it's easy to see why most of them overlooked signs that something was amiss.

It's the classic cult of personality relationship, in my view. Karras is mentioned as being extremely charismatic, despite social drawbacks such as his speech impediment. Also, the fact that his inventions are so incredible add a bit of razzle-dazzle to the equation.
Also... being a psychopath gives you a leg up. Makes you more committed, more organized, and the conviction in your voice and demeanor leads others to more readily accept what you're saying as true. Everyone from Colonel George Custer to Joseph Smith had the makings of a cult leader.
