If you watch Randy Smith demo (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifAsOMsrs6g) this early version of Deadly Shadows very closely, it seems as if the movement doesnt suffer from any of the crippling 3rd person implementation?!?! I wonder why the pc version got screwed so badly in the end?

Hehe, nice find, the Rutherford Castle loading screen is still there in the game files. However, you can perfectly move this way in the release version of TDS. The main issue with movement IMHO is that the body of Garrett doesn't follow camera rotation until it reaches about 90 degrees to the left or right. So if you make sharp turns because you're accustomed to always go "forward" and use only the mouse for navigation, the body does the annoying sidestep to rotate the body by max. 90 degrees (I wonder if this can be fixed in the ini files). By using strafing (never knew that this was actually (
http://dict.leo.org/forum/viewGeneraldiscussion.php?idThread=6563&idForum=4&lang=de&lp=ende) borrowed from German) and/or rotating the body with many small steps, you can circumvent the issue because the body rotation would then be adjusted quickly on every step. I think this is what Randy is doing here (he's playing on xBox, isn't he?).

Yes, this one he plays on the Xbox. The 1st person movement really ruined the game for me, sadly. However, when I look back, in light of this abomination they are currently stitching together, Deadly Shadow still adhered faithfully to three core things. Stephen Russell, Light Gem as a primary source of light/shadows stealth, and advanced sound propagation, as well as honoring the classic factions.
Unfortunately, all of the tragic movement issues ruined it, for me. Moving around clumsily, combined with the staggering lack of free form exploration due to small environments, boarding ladders, falling off beams, no rope arrows to actually go anywhere, and drowning. The combined weight of all these issues sunk the boat of the awesome 1st person movement physics that Looking Glass had spent their entire career crafting to perfection for Thief: The Dark Project.

It's a damn shame when Deadly Shadows is desirable in light of ThiAf. Despite being a clear drop in quality compared to the prior two games, it's a masterpiece compared to the nu-one.
