What about the atmosphere? Did they get the "Thief" ambience right ? - by Poetic thief

I of course, agree...The sound design was masterfully done, and groundbreaking as well...His sense of subtle melody and timing was woven into a sonic tapestry, that produced a deeply wondrous atmosphere. Many do not realize the enormity of impact sound has on the subconscious mind, and the overall experience.
You need to lay off the nostalgia sauce, because everything you just said is way over the top exaggeration.
You make it sound like it's the Mona Lisa of sound design and music.

I am going to keep doing it until Goldmoon learns to stop trying to pull me into his self-superiority vortex. a "truer" Thief fan than everyone else, and I'm just not going to feed his ego.
Wow.
I have never once said anywhere on this board that I am a more true fan of Thief than anyone else. What I have done is outlined a big picture of computer role playing games, and the role that Thief plays in it. Perhaps, because I have called you an uneducated gamer from time to time is what you are talking about. I stopped doing that. You came back to a Thief board after proclaiming that you really dont care about *ANY* Thief anymore you said. So, how am I supposed to respond to you, when you come here and try challenging me on my love of Thief and crpg.

Within the context of the history of computer role playing games, you bet your ass it is. All that and more.

... It would be pretty cool if Brosius' body of work from Thief played as background music at The Louvre.

Thanks for the link. I think it sounds very well done in it's own right, and fitting for Thief. Again, the person who made it obviously worked off the old games as a reference. Really, I don't think Eidos is giving much opportunity for those determined to dislike this game with the soundtrack at least.

... But he still knows nothing of Thief and/or its legacy. I do, and this is a Thief board.
Does this count?

Nothing I have said in this subforum has been unnecessary flaming. However, your response to my comment about the music (which, by the way, does not indicate that I
dislike the music, but don't let subtlety get in the way of jumping to conclusions) was absolutely unnecessary.
I never said you disliked the music, only that you exhibited a good measure of musical incompetence...which you did.

And anyway the "don't interact with me" thing is strictly for Goldmoon because trying to hold a conversation with him and his U NOT TR00 FAN schtick is pointless. I feel like trying with you is just as much of a waste of time but at least I can
pretend I'm getting my points across.
Different people appreciate different things in various degrees...With some people, THIEF happens to be appreciated to a deeper degree than with other people...
and that's okay.
This group of people, naturally tends to have a more intimate knowledge of the game, simply because they've spent more time with something they love, compared to others which may have a relatively lesser appreciation of it...
and that's okay too.
What's not okay, is to continually mischaracterize people because of harmless personal differences.Quote:

Goldmoon isn't doing anything to you...It is in fact your own insecure ego, that drives you to such an end.

My critique on Brosius' work, isn't based on nostalgia...it is from a musicological perspective.

It's mostly just a bunch of ambient humming sounds with occasional sound effects. Obviously it wouldn't work to have really active or upbeat music playing when so much of the game is listening to figure out what's around the corner, or for guards' reactions, etc. I think just about any competent sound designer could have easily duplicated his work on this front.

It's all about
quality of composition, and the musicality of the sonic textures which generate a desired dimensional space...Your crude, inane reflection, reveals your inexperience in this arena.

Although it takes far less talent to imitate rather than invent and innovate, one so uneducated might think duplicating Brosius' work would easily be done...and that all sound designers are simply technicians rather than artists.

Nice attempt at flinging meaningless jargon at me to make it sound like your opinion is somehow more valid. It's generic work that just about anyone in his profession could do quite easily.

It's only meaningless to you, because you fail to understand it...I would encourage you to set aside your misguided stubbornness, so that you might learn something.

Again, thinking that Brosius' work in the THIEF series is generic, is laughable...and all of my colleagues would agree that he produced brilliantly unique soundscapes.
