The most popular one that I know of is Urban Terror, but what other ones are there?

A friend of mine keeps telling me about (
http://wolfteam.aeriagames.com/) Wolfteam. MMO FPS, I never really felt playing it, but from what I've seen it has a good enough player base.

F.E.A.R. combat looks pretty good, but is it popular? They released the multiplayer component for free.

(
http://alientrap.org/nexuiz/) Nexiuz and (
http://www.warsow.net/) Warsow are both fairly good open-source shooters for Windows, Linux & Mac that I've messed around with a bit. I haven't played either sufficiently to give you a firm recommendation, but they had a good first impression.

I've been out of touch for a long time, but do people still play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory?
Also, the obligatory (
http://www.quakelive.com/#home) Quake Live.

That's the problem right there. There are so many great games that nobody plays! I wanted to play the Enemy Territory Fortress mod for Wolfenstein, but there were only 2 empty servers that required lots of downloads to join.
It would be so nice to go back to 1999 and play Team Fortress for Half-life and Quakeworld with hundreds of others!

I got into playing Quakeworld again a few years back, but the problem is, there are people out there who are freakishly good and still playing every day. You'd have a few good games with randoms who were tooling about much the same way you were, then the guy who'd been playing every day since 1996 would join with his memorised spawn patterns and utterly destroy you. Fun to see just how good people can get at an online shooter after more than 10 years, but a tad too frustrating to play with regularly.

You can still do this.

There are still few very active Team Fortress Classic servers running. Most TFC servers have only bots running around but if you filter these out you should see the best servers in Steam browser.

Well, there is the (
http://www.fileplanet.com/167069/160000/fileinfo/Call-of-Juarez-Mulitplayer-Demo) Call of Juarez 1 Multiplayerdemo for FPS fun Wild West style.
You can only play 2 out of 4 classes and there are only 2 maps and 2 game styles but there always used to be a bunch of people playing. And you can set up your own (password secured) server to play with your friends.
It might not be the most popular FPS game out there, but it´s free and it´s fun.
