http://sauerbraten.org) sauerbraten a popular game, but that doesn't mean its player count is high.
I don't know how popular it is, but there's a free version of quake 3.. I think it is called ioquake?

I played it for an hour... meh-ed and uninstalled it. It was a full match though.
