Ostriig, I had the same problem. In my case, Onboard audio was fine for listening, but as soon as I hooked up a Microphone, it was utter crap on the recording front.
I ended up grabbing an Asus Xonar DS for about $50 and couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'm going to wait for my paycheque to come in Monday and then spring for that DS.
One question, though - can I plug that into a PCIe slot? The GTX570 already obstructs one of the PCI slots, and I was thinking of plugging in a second graphics card for PhysX processing, but even the relatively small 8600GT will still obstruct the second PCI slot. So all I'd have left is the third PCIe 2.0 slot (says "at x4 mode, compatible with PCIe x1 and x4 devices").

No, the DS is a PCI card. If you want a PCI express card, you can spring for the DX instead, which is a bit more expensive ($90 CDN around here).

Looks like it's about £20 on top of the DS. I'm not too keen on that, but it might solve all my space problems, since I have a free PCIe x1 port right above the main graphics card.
But would something like this be certain to not pick up any interference, did you have that sort of problem or just on recording? Not sure exactly what's going on, but it seems like these components have some current running through their frames. I can hear a high pitched whine through my loudspeakers if the audio jack's connected, but if I take it out and place it on the motherboard's back plate or even on the graphics card's back plate the whine comes out a lot louder. It doesn't come from the chassis, though, if I touch it on the case it's completely silent.

I'm no audio expert, but usually it's separated enough to not have any problems. You can always buy it from somewhere that accepts returns and try it thusly.

Yeah, I suppose so, I'll look into returns policies. Thanks for the advice, dude.

I bought the HL Complete pack in the Steam sale for my former tutor. He's an old school PC gamer and had never played HL2 (he loved the first one), he'd only just gotten a new PC after years of having only shitty laptops and consoles. He helped me a lot during the past year so I thought it'd be the perfect gift.

I did last year when it was down to £20, and then it went to a daily deal the next day for a fiver. I was a bit pissed. This year I'll wait for things to become really cheap before splashing out.

You should pretty much only buy the non-daily-deals on the last day of the sale, just in case aa daily deal comes up on them before then.
