Hmmm, I'm more of an Asus kind of guy (good build quality, reasonable price, can flash the BIOS without loading an OS, etc). The only motherboards I would recommend people avoid would be MSI - of the 5 PCs I've built, 2 have had MSI motherboards, of which 1 was DOA and the other had the CPU cooler clamps snap off :(
Anyway, I've just bought SWAT 3 from GOG, and I'm going to be getting Shogun 2 Total War when all the DLC stuff is bundled together and at an OK price.

Sounds like a bad personal experience pointlessly generalised.
Gigabyte motherboards are excellent and this is a case where numbers don't lie.

Word. They were always super stable, feature packed and cheaper than Asus. Running one now, also built hundreds of systems based on them in my time as a service cave dweller. Must`ve been unlucky, Eva.

Yup, had 2 gigabyte mobos and they still boot fine to this day. This is after running 24 hours a day almost continually for a couple years apiece.

ASUS do not necessarily have the best customer support if something goes wrong, however, as I am finding to my cost at the moment. Plus they've just managed to CC myself and everyone else in an email list without using BCC, so yay data security.

The only one I have had probs with is MSI. Jesus 2 DOA boards and a third that had a glitchy north bridge. I ended up living with the 3rd one ( temperamental as it was) as I had been w/out a PC for 2 months straight by that time and was just ready to play VtM: Bloodlines for the first time.

I also ordered a used family pack of Windows 7 for $105. Quite a good deal because I have plenty of XP stuff around.

Is this supposed badness a recent thing? My Gigabyte P35 motherboard is just fine, never given me any trouble?
I'm going on 3 years with an EP31-DS3L (low to mid range P35 board) and it's been rock solid, even in a system that's pushing the limits of my 425 watt Antec PSU.
