No, I think not. What ever happened to selling me a game without trying to force some third-party service on me? This "Steamworks" is taking over the entire genre of games I love like some form of cancer. If you (as a player) want to use Steam, that IS FINE. Those of us who don't want to use Steam or give out a bunch of personal information to enjoy using a shiny disk we paid for shouldn't have to.
The only choice I have is to avoid supporting the creators, which is what I will do. I'm glad I went for this 360.
Oh yeah, voting with your wallet, that'll really show the developers (who, by the way, have no say in how the game gets distributed), they'll just have $50 less in their millions of dollars, boo hoo they'll have to shut down now
If you had any conviction whatsoever you wouldn't even buy the game used, you junkslut.

Yes, because an abstraction layer that makes it easier for games to communicate with your hardware is totally related to a service that makes games take longer to start up, can change its requirements at any time, and so forth.

Agreed. He'd pirate it to show them who the boss is.
That said, I may be in the position of forced pirating myself. Thanks to Steamworks DRM for Human Revolution I will have no way of getting a legitimate copy working over here. The result? I'm going to get a buddy to burn me a copy of the cracked version and send that over.

Is it the internet connection requirement that prevents it from working where you are, Toad?
lost_soul on 17/8/2011 at 21:28
@CCCToad: No, I'll buy it used for the console. The console should be an option for you too. They don't require any network connection (yet). It is this marvelous experience where you just stick the game in and it plays. No tying it to your e-mail address or typing in 20+ character codes... but I have a bad feeling this is the last console generation where enjoying something will be this simple.

No. No. No. You rant and rave about "not supporting the developer" because of Steamworks so you want to buy the console version used?
You're a hypocrite. Plain and simple. Show some fucking balls and NOT PLAY THE GAME AT ALL.

Yep. With no way to hook my personal laptop up to the web, using the official version is a no go. Consoles aren't much of an option either. There just isn't space to hook up a TV nor would shipping one be advisable.

Actually, from a developers perspective, it IS exactly the same. Except instead of graphics rendering, it is an abstraction layer for auto-updates / achievements / purchasing / social media / cloud saves and screenshots / etc. etc. etc.

So where do you draw the line? Do you use .NET? Java for Minecraft? Visual C++? DirectX?
