For movie night, I'd say your crowd sounds like it would enjoy Beasts of the Southern Wild, which isn't very recent, but is an excellent family movie. Probably a benchmark, even.
Man, I rewatched Beasts of the Southern Wild recently and, yeah, it's amazing. It actually reminds me of The Florida Project in a lot of ways. Same themes of southern American poverty, naturalistic performances from the kid actors, and great visuals.
Anyway, let us return... TO HYPE.

I intended to watch it, and now I am. That makes it officially something I was gonna watch, so I can talk about it here.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
It's a rare thing for one of these throwbacks to your childhood nostalgia driven shows to show up and give you exactly what you were hoping for. So you liked The Dark Crystal back in the day? Were you hoping for more Dark Crystal, but with more interesting characters, a better paced, more carefully developed story, all wrapped in a deeper introduction to a mysterious world you only got a tantalizing glimpse of previously? Well, here you go.
Yeah, it's all practical effects. All the characters are supercharged muppets. Some of them even move like muppets do. Though improved, the character's facial expressions are still somewhat limited at times. That's the beauty of it. It's like they took all the props from the original, updated them with better robotics, and gave the production team an even bigger budget to run rampant with.
This is good stuff.

Season 4 of Mr. Robot has finally been announced. It'll be the last season. S04E01 will be shown on October 6th (4 weeks from now).
I enjoyed the first 3 seasons. The first half of season 2 was a bit disappointing. Not much happening, nothing exciting, no progress in the story. But then the 2nd half was pretty good again. And so was season 3. The show might not be for everyone. But I think again that it should fly a bit better than average with the TTLG-crowd. Elliot is a sort of modern day Garrett. Or maybe it's just me ? (I'm a "computer-guy", with a focus on networking. And a night-person. And I liked the Thief-games. So maybe I can relate to the main character a bit more than the average person ?)
Anyway, you might want to check it out.
I'm gonna rewatch S01-S03 this month, so I will have a fresh memory when S04 starts.
The trailer for season 4 is (

Just for fun, just a random picture of Garrett:

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
I really, really liked the Dark Crystal as a kid so much so that -
When single shines the triple sun,
What was sundered and undone,
Shall be whole the two made one,
By Gelfling hand, or else by noneI wrote that from memory. It may not be 100% accurate (I'll google it after I post to compare) but I'm sure its close.
I haven't seen or heard it since the 80s.
Anyway, I happened to see a small bit of the start of the original Dark Crystal a few months ago and boy has it aged badly. I suppose I should have a look at the new effort but I generally dislike puppetry and don't really now why (esp as I like the original so much). Even in Farscape I struggled with it; it takes me out of the thing I'm watching somehow...

I know what you mean about the puppetry, but I still liked the original movie, and I'm actually quite eager to see the new version. However, it's been ages since I saw the movie and I'm now much more used to music sampling it, like this one. (

I've never heard that version of Trip Like I Do! I've heard different versions, but not this. I guess the Filter one (off the Spawn soundtrack) is the one I know most, but there was a longer more chilled out mix that I liked better. I really like the Divided by the Night album.
Gray on 9/9/2019 at 01:44
Well the Filter version is the popular one, that was just the album version. It's a pretty good album. The Filter version doesn't have the Dark Crystal samples, but it has the loud angry shouting and the dist guitars.

Going to take the plunge and start watching Stanger Things. It's been awhile since I watched anything that wasn't sitcom reruns on TV.

If the puppets bothered you in the original, then they'll bother you in the series, since they suffer from similar limitations. The Skeksies and other large, wild creatures are awesome and ultra emotive, while the gelflings are almost always stuck with some variation of dull surprise.

I like this original one better than the Filter one!
