Similar for me, I bought a bunch of new games in the past month or two, and just really couldn't get into any of them. I definitely want to get back to them at some point, they seem fairly well regarded and high quality, but for the moment, I've just been playing tons of Doom. I think sometimes you get lazy and it feels like a hassle to learn new game mechanics and strategies, and its much easier and more satisfying to just go back to something familiar. So I played all four episodes of Doom1 and then finished Doom2, and now I'm working my way through all the extra campaigns that come with the anniversary edition. And I'm digging every minute of it.

Man, I haven't played Doom in a few decades.

Then good news: it's still the same as it's ever been, so you're not missing out on anything.

Except I'm missing out on fun. I recall that game being the first time I ever played a first person shooter game and it was amazing to me.

Are Steam achievements worth anything in the gaming world?

I also played the remastered Doom that came out on the XBox the other week. I always have time for the first episode, and I replay it every two years or so, but I think this is the first time that I've played episode 2 since the 1990's. I'm not a big fan of it, the level design seems so lazy. Or maybe it's just because I haven't got nostalgic feelings for it?
The new music in the remastered version is pretty good, but it doesn't beat the original soundtrack. Also, this is the first time I've played an old-school FPS on the XBox, and I think it feels surprisingly good!

How is it on the Xbox vs. an old 386 PC from the early 90's? I played through it in '93 on a government computer while out at sea. So much fun!

Doom still rules. Works great on a controller. And now it's in 4K, I guess.
I've been playing Astro Bot in spite ranting last week about soulless, overpolished first-party Sony games. It's not soulless, though. It's basically Super Mario Galaxy but with more interesting powers and a camera that actually points in the right direction. It feels like Nintendo if Nintendo had better graphics. It is unbelievably polished, but the polish is in service of fun gameplay, like how every crate explodes into a pile of physics-driven acorns that you can fling around or how every surface you walk on has a different haptic effect in the controller. The music is less annoying. The platforming is maybe a hair below Mario quality. That's for purists to decide. The PS branding is gratuitous although when I found the Prince of the Cosmos and a matching katamari, I admit I was happy. My heart is not made of stone! Game's basically a series of pleasant surprises, so if you have the means, I highly recommend it.

I guess because I played Descent before I ever got to Doom, I've never been particularly enamoured with it, so: Doom's best gift to everyone was that it led us to Strife. I know this because I saw my senior in high school play it on his computer, and you could talk to the demons NPCs, immediately showing us that if you decided to kill everyone that yes, John, the demons are you indeed.
Glad to hear Astrobot's doing everything right! It really does look like something that prioritises fun and creativity and wonder, so it's on the list!

I might be easily entertained, but I like chasing achievements for games that I really enjoy (but then I also like to max out the even more pointless Steam badge for games I like so I'm probably just an easy mark). Achievements like the gnome one for HL2: Ep. 2 do kinda add to the game at least; I had a lot of fun doing it, but never would've bothered without the achievement. It's something of a rare example though, mostly they're just a little extra motivation to keep messing around in a game I happen to enjoy regardless.
