I might be easily entertained, but I like chasing achievements for games that I really enjoy (but then I also like to max out the even more pointless Steam badge for games I like so I'm probably just an easy mark). Achievements like the gnome one for HL2: Ep. 2 do kinda add to the game at least; I had a lot of fun doing it, but never would've bothered without the achievement. It's something of a rare example though, mostly they're just a little extra motivation to keep messing around in a game I happen to enjoy regardless.
I guess I meant like getting free upgrades or extra items in a particular game or Steam points for a discount or something like that. I too chase pointless achievements here and there but the last time I really got obsessed was a long time ago when I played Jane's USAF combat flight sim. In that game you made points based on the difficulty level you set and your success rate. With those points you made rank all the way up to four star general and depending on how crazy and successful you were with mission objectives you won medals. I only ever managed to make three stars but I got all the medals. It was silly to chase all that but it took far longer for me to become bored with a flight sim that way than with others that lacked a points system.

Yeah, nothing like that on Steam at least. Which is almost surprising come to think of it, since they put a lot of effort into hooking people onto the platform. You'd think they'd come up with some social meta-layer for achievement points that you can convert to exclusive NFT hats for Valve games or something.

I'd play Steam games more if points meant free t-shirts or hats. And to think I used to play Half-Life 20 hours a day until I finished the story mode all for the cool finale and nothing more. Of course I've never played since because there's no incentive. Why have I played Thief OG and FM's over and over for a couple of decades then? What the hell is wrong with me?

I, too, would ghost Thief 1 and 2 if I got a real Garrett hoodie at the end so I could style around in the shadows of ThiefGen and be the envy of anyone I hadn't coshed over the head yet.

As part of my mopping up of shorter games on my backlog, I've been playing The Almost Gone. I like the aesthetic and the (relatively light-weight) puzzles, but I'm no big fan of the story and the storytelling, which mistakes vagueness and ominous hints for complexity. That sort of thing can work, but you have to be pretty damn good at what you're doing, you have to be evocative rather than fuzzy. Because I realised 2/3 into the game that I didn't care about anything that was going on, I ended minding the faff of navigating the chapters (also because the game doesn't control nearly as smoothly as it should - I suspect this is a game that will feel better to play on tablets) and watching the last half hour or so on YouTube instead. And now I'm playing T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age instead. :)

Finally, a reason to play games! They do have that slightly disappointing Points Shop for points you get for your purchases, so they probably won't be coming up for anything particularly fun for
free. I did get a sweet halo effect for my profile picture though.

A halo effect like an angel or a Halo game background?

(

Edit: actually bronies probably didn't exist 20 years ago, but that's about the last time SA was relevant so I'll stick with that

Something Awful was always hating on furries. I mean that's not how I roll either, but why the hate, what have they ever done to you?

Why did I click on that link?
Also, I just realized that after years on Steam I haven't set up my profile.
