But you have to use

on your models textures. Otherwise the model AND the shadow mesh cast shadows, which makes performance worse.
(You can also do this with func_statics in the editor. Just give the func_static a noshadows property, then build a lower detailed func_static and cover it with shadow or shadow2 material (shadow2 is NoSelfShadow)
