What can FM makers learn from LGS? An original feeling of a greatest game series of all times named: THIEF ! :thumb:

After going back and playing Thief 1 & 2 again for the first time in 3 years I think that the question should be "What can the makers of future Thief games learn from the FM makers"? Dont get me wrong the original games are great and a credit to the people who made them but some of the fan missions that have come out since are to say the least outstanding even the early ones that used only the original components .The ideas and different ways of employing enemy ai coupled with some outstanding architecture make some of the FMs above the original standard. Having said that one thing that I did think to myself while playing T1 was that atmosphere seemed much better .ie as you walk past a door to a dark room you got a subtle creepy piece of music .
So maybe my answer is a general one but I think that the only thing missing from FMs is better audio, it is after all a stealth game and you are listening for the smallest sounds the faintest of clicks or drips
All praise the FM builders :thumb:

Just because we have new objects and authors aren't pushed to release missions at the same pace as the LGS designers were doesn't mean we have nothing to learn. If they hadn't made such a strong impression on players in the first place, it wouldn't still be inspiring FM's. I'm an FM author, and I review the missions once a year at least to glean things from them to apply to missions. Give one of the original designers a year or more to work on only one mission. You really think it would be inferior to other FM's? I still see inspiring things in the original missions that I think many author's don't incorporate into their missions, prettier or not.

Level 1 - Running Interference
BEST FEATURE: Funny mission, good architecture, some challenges, even for an expert thief.
WORST FEATURE: dunno
Level 2 - Shipping ... and Receiving
BEST FEATURE: Pretty big mission, nice conversations between people
WORST FEATURE: The poor scenario, the door opening system, the redundant secrets.
Level 3 - Framed
BEST FEATURE: Visit Shoalsgate, eh ! + so many well-made secrets, also good architecture
WORST FEATURE: Terrible music...
Level 4 - Ambush!
BEST FEATURE: dunno...I never liked this mission (see Worst feature)
WORST FEATURE:having to pass again and again through the same places (the bridge, the market place...) to visit everything, what a pain. :erm:
Level 5 - Eavesdropping
BEST FEATURE: Discovery of the mechanist universe, some clues to the plot (servants...)
WORST FEATURE: tiny !
Level 6 - First City Bank and Trust
BEST FEATURE: What a good idea, a thief robbing a bank ! + the size of the bank, the organisation of the different levels...
WORST FEATURE: dunno, this mission is so fun ! :D
Level 7 - Blackmail
BEST FEATURE: Many to break in (you guessed it, this is always my first criteria :p )
WORST FEATURE: Truart is always murdered...I'd have liked to do it myself ! And no real difficulty to get out.
Level 8 - Trace the Courier
BEST FEATURE: Following somebody...
WORST FEATURE: What a crappy town.
Level 9 - Trail of Blood
BEST FEATURE: The basis idea, the Maw universe
WORST FEATURE: Kinda boring once entered in the stone mouth.
Level 10 - Life of the Party
BEST FEATURE: Best mission eva ! So big, so deep, so... :D
WORST FEATURE: Lack of enterable houses, no real difficulty to get out of the place + the stupid lever that simply disables the alarm which is supposed to complicate your escaping.
Level 11 - Precious Cargo
BEST FEATURE: First time real daylight is used in Thief, new horizons opened.
WORST FEATURE: boring mission...metal and metal and metal and, oh, some carpet and metal and metal. Kill everybody, metla won't be a problem any more.
Level 12 - Kidnap
BEST FEATURE: The lost city modernised by the mechanists.
WORST FEATURE: Cavador is really too heavy, and I never really enjoyed the Precursor's universe (not developed enough).
Level 13 - Casing the Joint
BEST FEATURE: The map drawing idea, numerous secrets.
WORST FEATURE: I hate ghosting. :eww:
Level 14 - Masks
BEST FEATURE: The 3rd level is pretty well made, the masks picking operations.
WORST FEATURE: level made in the previous mission, no real "punishment" if you fall on the poisonous carpet in the masks rooms, possibility to disable the gas.
Level 15 - Sabotage at Soulforge
BEST FEATURE: Bots, bots, I want more bots for my WA ! :p The feeling of last level, HUGE level, so many challenges (the turrets room, brrr), so many ideas, SO fun ! :D
WORST FEATURE: repetitive architecture
Anyway, I don't think LGS has been that imaginative with Thief 2...levels that repeats themselves (the Lost City, the City in Framed and trace the Courrier, Gervasius' Manor...), and a lack of ambition, to my mind.

Even though the OMs look dated and simple compared to today's FMs, I still am often impressed and amazed at the sheer creativity of the designers. They thought of doing certain things with Dromed when there were NO examples before to go by.

Same here, even if the OMs look simpler than some FMs, they still have a special feeling, a particular and magic atmosphere I rarely met in FMs. They created a whole new universe after all...

It's the single thing that we get not sticked at the original things. But to observe an invented thing, it not bad. It will be the future of something in this manner long-lastingly. We try it! :thumb:
