Most of what I feel and dislike has been written here, except for one thing that I have not seen mentioned. This was so frustrating when I played TDS. When guards were looking for me in the first two games, I liked to send them off in another direction by shooting a broadhead into a far wall. then I could sneak up on them or whatever. I would always hear a *plink* and off the guard would run in that direction. Once in a very great while in TDS, that happens. However, about 95 percent of the time, the arrow just disappears into the wall, not making a sound. I can shoot one arrow after another into a different wall, and soon my supply would be depleted without any effect. I guess that the walls must be made of sponges.
One of the things I DID like in TDS was the way that objects reacted to each other. One example was the area that had the wagon. I would lure the enemy to the wagon, and then push the wagon into them, forcing them down the hill. Sometimes the AI would be trapped against the wall. Another was the barrels that bounced realistically.
Just thought of another dislike.... Garret trying to move barrels and crates as if he has no hands. There is an area that I saved and played often. In the alley near the Stonehaven market (I think it was called), I blocked an exit with the two crates and the barrel that are near there. Then I lured AI there, and jumped over the crates. It was funny to watch them try to get to me. You should have seen them kick the crates out of the way, or try to until the crates disintegrated. Sometimes they would continue to kick the crates until they died! But I digress. Anyway, if they kicked the crate back against a wall, I tried to move it back to the alley's exit. But it can't be done. The crate will not move away from the wall, and I kept thinking that I could move this crate, if only Garret had hands.
Another slightly irritating thing are the things that AI say that make no sense for the situation. If they kick a crate, sometimes they will accuse me of throwing it at them, even when I am nowhere near them. Also, when they kill another AI, one tells the other to "get his cloak", even when he is not wearing one. It was probably meant to be said about Garret, but they don't.
There are areas of TDS that I found slightly enjoyable, but the first two games were much more so, especially the second one.

only hated two things about TDS
1. That it's the end of the story.
2. All these idiots who think that 'they could have done a better job if they were in charge'. That kind of armchair quarterbacking annoys the taff out of me.

Thankfully there aren't too many of those. Most of us understand we couldn't have done much better under the same circumstances.

I don't know anyone who thinks they could do better. I can't program software, but that doesn't mean that I HAVE to like the game immensely. One does not preclude the other. I am sure that we all have games that we don't like, or like just a little.
And even Windows itself is the subject of common complaints, but most people who do complain about it can't program to save their lives.

honestly, I really liked TDS. It was great in it's own right - you just kind of had to seperate it from the first two, I thought.
The things I found to be better in TDS as compared to the original two, also had limitations that made up for their advancement.
Like - I love how much more responsive AI were to their environment in TDS. Even to the extent of shooting water arrows at them (what fun!). In T1/T2, that had no effect if they weren't alerted. In TDS, AI were also more observant of other AI missing from their patrol or post.
But, drawbacks though, they didn't search for you long enough (I thought), and didn't pursue you anywhere near as long as they would in T1/T2.
Graphics were great. I could even look past the low res quality considering what was done with lighting. The Hammer Cathedral and The Cradle really showcased how effective lighting could be done - much more realistic and absorbing than the first two installments.
John P's tex pack is amazing, though, defi worth the install - again, great job on that, man! :thumb:
I thought it was a little too easy to become a walking arsenal of weaponry, and that you recieved a bit more loot per mission compared to T1/T2. But, good taffers don't need to spend it all, right?! ;)
But - the one complaint, though, that I had a hard time overlooking . . . was the loading zones and 2-part missions. I could deal with the town sections being a little bigger, but the loading zones were not only distracting, but an easy means of escape, and detracted from the continuity of a mission.

Yep!
And you have hit upon much of the general consensus in your post.

I can live with a lot of what's been posted, clunky walking, pointless climbing gloves, etc.... But TDS had such a strangely different sort of feeling or atmosphere about it. Something about the colors and lighting used. The first two had such lovely rich black shadows that really looked like someone could disappear in them. And the lighting was much warmer in the original two; TDS is very cold and gray.
I really liked the way people interacted, though, and some of the guards and so forth had really funny lines. Maybe we should start a "what did you like best about TDS" thread.

Unfortunately, those threads are killed by "Are you taffin' me?!" type posts and worse, and attempts to "correct" the positive feelings that deviate from the majority view.
It would be interesting to see such a thread, if one were possible. It would be a lot of work to delete any negative posts or sentences.:p
Welcome, by the way!

It's been said by movie reviewers that movie sequels are more difficult to accept, and are not as good as the originals, because they have a lot to live up to (the first movie). It is possible that game sequels are like that. I don't see TDS as a sequel really, but I have read some posts that say that. Perhaps that is one reason that it is difficult for them to accept TDS. Sometimes I wonder if TDS would have been liked more if it had come out before the other two. Nothing to compare it to. Taken by itself, I can see good things about TDS, but if I think of it in the same way as the others, comparing it to them, it loses a few points. However, some have said that they have played all three and liked TDS better. Go figure :). They seem to be in the minority though.
T2 was different enough from T1 that even though it was a sequel more or less, it could also almost stand alone in its own right I thought. TDS is also much different from the other two, but the list of complaints seems to be longer. And with the Thief name, it is natural to compare it to the others.
I would also like to see a "What I liked about TDS" thread. I would probably post there. As far as the "Are you taffing me?" posts go, people should just realize that we don't all like or dislike the same things.
