This is as odd to me as taffers saying there was no electricity in Dark Project.
TDS
is a sequel. It is, in fact, the last third of a trilogy. Act 3 of a three-act story. It was the wrapping-up of a series of Thief games that had been interrupted by LGS's demise before it could be concluded. This is a fact, not an opinion. I am under the impression you are not interested in the story, or only small parts of it, because the story makes it clear.:sly: A sizeable percentage aren't interested in the story. I, myself, am very interested in the story, as set in motion by TDP/Gold and TMA--especially since I couldn't play the games for years, but I could read the texts and listen to the voice files. :)
What I meant was that it could stand on its own. It did not depend on the other two games to exist. I am speaking of the story. In my mind it was different enough.

Nobody's understanding anybody's posts of late. Hopefully it's temporary, and will pass less painfully than a kidney stone. Maybe...like a kidney bean.
Yeah, perhaps we are just tired of this thread. I dunno.

Developers seem to say a lot of things when money is involved, and an established fan base. I used to moderate the forums at Ion Storm, and there was a lot of spin going on prior to release...lots of 'defusing'. Faceless was great at talking punk and getting everyone on side. He would make a few wise ass remarks, post a kewl screen shot and mostly everyone would rally behind him.

Randy: This is a very authentic sequel to Thief and Thief 2, and it follows very much in the footsteps laid out for the triology (sic) at Looking Glass.
That really doesn't mean anything. Authentic and accurate are different things. TDS attempts to be authentic, but falls short of being completely accurate.
Bioshock is a good example of developers spinning sales too. Ken was here buttering up a lot of folks during development, and in the end...it really wasn't the game he was selling to the core base of the previous Shock games.
At any rate, what the devs say...and what I have played...are somewhat conflicting. :p

I've never understood the official "canon" argument. So just because the Devs tell me to imagine Garrett's story in a particular way, I have to?
I do this with a lot of things. As far as I'm concerned; Terminator three never happened, Matrix 1 was a stand alone story, and none of the events of TDS happened. ...and I'm a lot happier for it.
jtr7, I think you misunderstood my previous statement, so allow me to clarify. TDS did terrible things with the story and atmosphere, and that's why I disown it.

Then you did not understand my point.
No, how the hell can it have come out before the other two?

I want to add something to this post that I made above. I could easily see T2 being a sequel, partially because in one of the missions, we go back to the Lost City after it was changed. That's just one example. There are others. But TDS was very different from the first two, right down to the way some of the characters talked. There are other instances as well. Details like that set it apart in my mind. An earlier post said that you had to set it apart from the other two. I agree with that.

New Horizon, I posted that quote to show Randy called it a sequel. Obviously, any adjectives applied to that are subjective.
Jarvis, I understood. In fact I tend to agree. Moreso in the past than now, but only because I've created fanon excuses to reconcile the problems. Going through all the media files for all the games for the ETU I came up with ways to glue pieces together for my own entertainment, and because of wishful thinking for a cohesive Thief Universe.
Yubetcha, the stand-alone quality was one of the earliest complaints we had about it. Being a sequel, the end of Garrett's main story, it should have dovetailed with the previous Acts. Since the console version was more important, and it would be the introduction of a whole new audience to Thief, the potentially confusing aspects connecting it to the past games were omitted, hidden, ignored, or relegated to a backstory the new crowd would have to discover outside TDS on their own.

It bothered me as well. But that only confirms what I said.... that it can stand alone.
I just HAVE to mention a couple of other dislikes while I am writing. Why does it have to be difficult for Garret and AI as well to walk over bodies? Sometimes I get stuck and have to jump onto a wall to go on. Also, am I the only one who wishes that just once in awhile, Marla would shut up? She's the owner of a store where we buy our equipment. But even with things that I don't like, Thief is STILL one of my all time favorites. Morrowind and Splinter Cell are also right up there. I can still remember many years ago, when I first saw that Thief Gold box in a store, and tried to decide whether to spend the money for it. I almost didn't. Glad I did though. I was hooked from the first mission.
Vini, Vidi, Velcro...I came, I saw, I stuck around.
I don't regret the money that I spent for these games, but I can't say that about most of the games that I have.
jtr7 on 5/2/2008 at 04:22
:thumb: Yep.
Just to be clear, no one's arguing that it can't stand alone, but that it shouldn't have been made that way to the extent that it was.

What I hate most is that I own two copies of the game, but my GFX card doesn't have a soddin' pixel shader on it so I can't play it !
