i was thinking it would be interesting if garret could have a pet in fan missions to help him
like a bird you can fly to get a birds eye view of an area,or maybe a dog that can be used to distract enemys
maybe you can think of a use for a pet/type
and could new dark even support something like that?
just a interesting idea i came up with
i do remember where you get the horse and ride it out=scripted but it was a fun experience

A Muslim pet?

I think you should stop thinking.

Ignoring the rudeness above. . .Personally I don't think he's the TYPE to have a pet. At least. . .not INTENTIONALLY. He's not going to be sentimental enough to pick up a stray kitten or puppy and take care of it and get attached to it.
On the flip side - in general, he doesn't seem like *THAT* bad of a guy (to me, anyway) underneath all his gruffness. . .so if he *DID* have a pet, it would probably be something that attaches itself to him - sticks around. . .and he reluctantly starts to accept it and maybe even care about it. It happens. He wouldn't be the first to be 'adopted' by an animal and gradually come to actually care about it. Animals have a way of working their way into our affections. ;) But yeah - I don't see him deliberately going out and finding and keeping a pet of any type.
As an animal/pet lover myself, I always prefer to see animals and pets in stories as companions than not having any.
As far as mechanics go. . .the only way I really see it working would be something either cut-scened, then a static of some sort in a mission - or just referenced. I don't really see how it'd be done. But as much as I know about scripting or programming, I could be wrong. Unless its a 'pocket pet', though, I'm not sure it'd make sense to take an animal sneaking around dangerous situations. A dog or cat would mostly be a liablility while sneaking around (unless, maybe, they were more magical, and less 'normal') - too unpredicable. A horse would be. . .useless on any inside mission, or any mission sneaking around city streets with cobblestones. A bird - again, rather useless inside - and sort of noticable in a lot of city-settings. So. . .yeah, to be honest, I think if he were to be adopted by some animal. . .it'd probably stay in his apartment during his jaunts, thus, not really showing up during missions. :P
Just my take on the idea.

I think the idea is interesting but wouldn't it be pretty sad to see garrett's pet dying in game ? :(
In my opinion it would work much better in a modern infiltration game where the bird would be replaced by a scouting drone or something and the simple dog by a very highly trained one.
But i like the idea of a sort of mechanical / robot little mouse (gifted or stolen from the Mechanist) that you could use to scout some dangerous zone or to pass / access certain small entrance / area ! :D

Something that could be used like Floyd in Jet Force Gemini would be cool. Garrett can't get into tiny ductwork to disconnect an alarm system so he has a scouting orb on a cat's collar and directs it through to frob a switch.

Something like Among Two Storms, your partner is a burrick or a spider. :D
A lot of stuff can be done with conversations. But long conversations are diffucult, since players don't have the patience to wait until it's over.

A snake, perhaps.
I really liked the snakes in Godbreaker.
They could be used as a weapon in game. Have a few of those slippery buggers in your inventory and fling them at unsuspecting guards when the need arises.
Hang about, he could even keep 'em in a quiver, and shoot them like arrows!
How awesome would that be folks! WHIZZO!:D:cheeky:

When does Garrett ride a horse?
@downwinder, all the things you mention (distracting enemies, previewing an area) can all be done with Garrett's arrows and tools. A master thief employing a pet, which could easily give up his location, seems silly to me. Even human partners can be annoying and not worth the risk (see: Erin). And remember his credo, "I work alone."

Even though a cat would be most logical for a thief, the game already has those little spiders (as well as elementals) imp'd in. IDK if it'd be possible to combine the functions of a scouting orb and the [controlled] movement and jumping of those spiders.
I realize that you wouldn't need the orb feature if you switched to the POV of the spider al la "Among Two Storms" but if the spider had to be directed remotely from Garret's POV in a similar fashion as how you can move Garrett around while looking at a mirror, that'd be interesting as well; a modded orb which remains in inv could serve as the remote control. Maybe.
But you folks are brilliant and will probably come up with something far better than I can imagine. :thumb:
