I agree, bypassing control would probably be easier to implement.
What about a small pet, then just showing it 'doing its thing' in cut scenes? (Can Thief even DO cut scenes mid-mission??) Could show Garrett's hands letting the rat/mouse down, show it scuttling into a crack and pulling out a key/puzzle item and scampering back to his hands. Or. . .maybe it gets distracted in there and it becomes another puzzle on how to get its attention and lure it back out WITHOUT causing a scene. :)

There's a NVScript for this: NVCutsceneTrap

I think he would have had something like a mechanical pet too....
I remember a museum that had a small very quick thing that rolled along the floor...it wasn't the spider bot but much smaller.....I remember one being in a crate near some mechanist Docks area in a mission once...it was so odd to see it in the crate, whirring away....but I digress.....yeah something mechanical gifted to him and used to spy for him would be so cool.

I can see Garrett with a crow or an owl

A falcon! One with a mechanical eye like Garrett's that Garrett can also see through just like a scouting orb. Gives him a bird's eye view where cops and guards are located or patrolling.

i was thinking same thing but i was thinking garrett takes his mech eye out and places it in a holder on mech owl=like original clash of the titans
and for mech mouse same thing but for ground level/grab key/nibble on rope to open a gate/etc/=like beast master x2 pharret
also maybe some kind of wall crawler to get into windows where there is no wood/metal for rope/moss arrows
and ofcourse a water type pet? for those underwater parts that are hard to get to due to lack of air
as far as creatures in game that can be converted to pet as is ,i would pick fire element as its loyal and can shoot so much so fast would be great to use to open up a blockaid

I could see the pet being the reason Garrett gets caught :joke:
I don't see him really wanting to have a pet, especially after hearing the story about the cat in the bag at the Downwind Thieves' Guild.
