But the cool maze in Zork was a well done one that I actually enjoyed mapping and traversing, especially with that rascally thief running around! I think many other adventure games tried to copy zork maze and did a crappy job of it

#1
Having the author's own sense of Thief Morality forced upon my playing style, unless it makes perfect sense (Framed, etc). I have my own way of doing things, and it only irritates me if I'm ordered to ghost, or to play a certain specific way, or to not give anyone a concussion, etc.
(That's what got me about the original version of Mages Area...why wouldn't you want to put the Haunts away? The fewer supercharged sword-wielding corpses still standing, the better!)
That's why Art of Thievery was so surprising, since it didn't put such strict limits on how I operate on expert; it gave me a choice of how to proceed. "Don't want to ghost? Great! Just don't set off any alarms." I can live with that.
#2
Being forced into combat (unless I have a definite advantage). This isn't Rune...Garrett's spindly little arms would snap if he even looked at a Dwarven Warhammer.
#3
Having to take damage in long falls. Irritating.
#4
A shortage of stuff. One rope arrow, two water arrows, one broadhead and a moss arrow do not make me a happy thief. Garrett's a professional...don't you think he'd be smart enough to bring as many water arrows as he could carry? The most important thing is understanding the psychology of the character!
#5
The lockpicking thing. How long should it take a master thief to pick a lock? Six, seven hours?
#6
Overly alert AI. Especially the stupid civvies who run screaming for the first guard at the slightest hint of trouble (e.g., my vis gem flickering slightly). If I were a guard, I'd probably do them in, myself.
#7
Huge rooms with too much going on either visually or in terms of activity (and a pox on those who cause both to occur!). Too much stuttering and I start getting sick.
#8
Guards and Mechanists with those damned no-KO helmets! If possible, I backstab them out of sheer frustration. It's the designer's fault I'm committing murder!
#9
Burricks. Hate them. Kill them all.
#10
Spiders. Whose bright idea was it to include spiders in every single FPS, anyway? Oh, they're scary, oooh! Miserable rotten...
#11
Mechanists. Bring back the Hammers!
I'll think of more...oh, I'll think of more.

Silver Sorrow: you're making me laugh so hard I think I woke the kids.
Glad to know I'm not the only one with "peeves".
And by the way...I finished that mission that was bugging me so I feel better, and the comments above have helped me to laugh at myself. The author did MUCH better on his second mission. I guess that's what I get for playing the great missions and then trying to be entertained by a "two hammer".

Hmm, a two hammer first mission, then a "much better" second mission... could be:
Assassination, then Prisoner's Revenge (by Vitus)
or
Escape:The Bear Pits, then Tower of Illusion (by Wrichards)

I'm pretty much on the same terms as Silver Sorrow - except for the height and mantling thing. LOTP was (and is) my all time favorite OM because of the need for jumping and mantling skills. Sigh...I only wish it were possible to be a ground sneaker and even underground in that mission as well

When I have the lights off, the drapes shut, game set on maximum gamma correction, maximum monitor brightness and I still cannot see.

1) Places that are completely dark.
2) The hammer in the chest trick.
3) Guards guarding nothing.
4) Not enough starting gear.
5) BEING FORCED TO GHOST.....at least have the requierment in the FM description so you know ahead of time.
6) Civilians who moan when you come within 100 feet of them on a public street...Especially when they run away yelling "He's got a bow!" and I don't even have one. Little wimp snitches!!!! That's usually when I'm faced with (5) don't kill anybody.

#1 A situation where every guard is knocked out and I've been trying to find a key for 2 hours. And after I find the key and open the door there is soon another locked door before me and I don't have a key to open it. This is the time when I stop playing that mission.
#2 Locked wooden doors that are made unbashable. If I don't have the key to open the door I try to bash it open and the only way to find out that the door can't be bashed open is to hit it with sword for a minute or a two.

okay, I think that we've compiled enough fm complaints
