This seems like a simple question that is central to the thief experience, and I don't think we've had any threads dedicated to it yet (although a few people have touched upon it when describing why they liked thief).
So: what do you like most about being Garrett?
For me, it is probably the feeling of being smarter (or more competent) then the people I am sneaking past.

I always get a secret (okay, not so secret) thrill out of sneaking through the shadows, hearing conversations I wasn't meant to hear and observing other humans (albeit of the AI variety ;) ) going through their daily/nightly routines totally unaware they're being watched. I don't know if it makes me feel powerful or just plain superior that I can use stealth in ways they never could. I can melt into the shadows, remain still as death, barely breathing while guards or the City Watch walk right past me; close enough that I can reach out as quick as a snake strikes to lift a key or purse from their belts. It's especially gratifying when I pull off a heist without anyone being the wiser (til the next morning when they realize they've been robbed). Sneak in, with the barest whisper of fabric on the windowsill, crouch down by the safe and expertly use my lockpicks til the lock opens and the loot is mine, sneak out again, still with barely a sound, like a shadow in motion; not leaving a trace that I've been there other than the loss of aforementioned loot.
Yeah; I guess that's kind of what it feels like to me when I play Garrett.

Being morally "gray".
I like putting myself into Garrett's shoes because of his unpredictability when it comes to making decisions. Because Garrett's character was so well fleshed out through briefings and cutscenes you got a good idea of how he would react in most situations, and I like the fact that he could be a total wild card depending on what he has to gain from any given situation.
For example - when I enter a room and see a noble sitting in a chair by a fireplace not noticing im there I have a choice - I can choose the SneakyJack side of me and slap a KABONG across his noggin to satisfy my need for random blackjacking shenanigans or I can just as well take the Garrett side and realize that he could hear my approach and make quite the fuss - giving me away and alerting everyone within earshot.. hence causing me trouble and making my life more of a pain than it needs to be.
Regardless of how people see Garrett as a person, you cant deny that he is interesting.

Well said SJ. I guess it all comes down to the fact that I've never played a game before where I could become so totally engrossed in playing the main character. So absolutely immersed.

Nice descriptive writing Dia. That pretty well sums up the playing experience for me too.
Why Garrett specifically? We understand him. We all have some part of him lurking in our souls.

Thanks kamyk. This thread makes me feel so good I wanna go out & blackjack somebody tonight. :ebil:
Btw (& this is totally off topic, kind of); about 1 & 1/2 hrs. ago I went to take my dog out for a walk. I just moved in to this apartment & am not used to A.) having to walk my dog as he always had his own yard to run in, and B.) locking up my place of residence every time I went for a walk, having lived out in the country where everybody knows everybody else. So naturally what I feared would happen eventually, did: I locked myself out of my apartment. I had to rely on some neighbor kids to give me a boost up to my bedroom window (thank God I left it open!!!!!), rip out the screen, and proceed to slither through an 20" opening because the window won't open any farther. Managed to do it though, giving the kids and my new neighbors a laugh. I just hope to God no one took any pics with their cell phones. Needless to say, I've had my fill of sneaking through windows for the week.

* he comes across as witty, intelligent and experienced....
* a guy that can handle any situation and doesn't lash out or get too emotional, he's in control
* still he seems to have kept some compassion and humor to him
* he's the best archer and thief there is - what's not to like :)
