I'm a waitress
I did that throughout high school and University. I now prefer to hire people with waitering experience in their past, as I think it teaches invaluable lessons about hard work, holding your tongue and most importantly teaches you your own relative insignificance.

We had the most opinionated waiter last night. He approved of my choice (carbonara) with "Great" but was positively sneery at my gfs choice (truffle risotto) - <camp>"Oh, okay"</camp>. And then he was clearly displeased at getting only a 5% tip which was going to be 10% until he called me mate.

Does anyone else here absolutely love their job?
I like my job. I'm working in the design of turbines so it's quite technical, it's actually somewhat related to my degree (physics) and it's a part in the process of Making Cool Bits of Machinery. So it's work I find existentially satisfying somehow. I count myself pretty lucky.

Even the most god awful waiter will get 10% from me. 20% means they rocked the house. Are the standards different in the U.K. or something?

"Wassat, mate? Your girl wants rice and mushrooms? Bit country-bred isn't she. Oh well, I'll ask the chef to make it low-fat, we don't want her belly button to pop out, do we -- and just between you and me, mate, she looks like she needs all the help she can get. "

I forget, where are you again? Because I believe wait staff actually get paid living wages in Europe.

A god awful waiter won't get anything from me, otherwise it's 10%. If it's excellent service then I'd give more.

I believe it's minimum wage still in the UK which is £6.19 per hour over 21 which equates to $9.57, £4.98 for 18-20. When I did 'waiting' I'd get more in tips than I did in wages but that was pre-minimum wage and it was a share of total tips.

I'm in the U.S. - minimum wage here is $7.25/hour (can be higher depending on your state), but I forgot that tipped employees are subject to an even lower minimum age, I think it's around $2-3/hour. So yeah, tips are a big thing here. I'll go 15% on average, 20% for excellent. Giving only 10% here is a real insult, and would definitely get the point across that service was bad or that the customer was unhappy for some reason. At 5%, some waiters/waitresses may ask you to step outside for a moment.

Either that or they expected a blow job with their coffee and donut before the waiter could earn their tip.
