Sod off.
I grew up in Africa, I've seen real hard work. Waiters? One of the easiest jobs in the whole goddamn world. First World Problems at their finest.
You on the other hand, have no damn idea what real hard work looks like. What's the hardest job you've had? I've worked in factories where I didn't see the Sun all damn day, grinding wood, shifting steel cages and pallets and getting burnt by noxious chemicals. And you know what? It wasn't hard, it was just frikking work. So anyone who gets to walk around a restaurant all day taking food and drink around has it easy imo. And I got rubbish pay for those jobs but I was glad of them and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I had to.

I don't care if it's the easiest job in the world or not. Any job that, done full-time, doesn't make at least a minimal living, is a shit job IMO. Are there people who have it worse? Yes - but there always are, so that's a conversational non-starter along the lines of "Well, Ugandan child soldiers have it worse, so STFU!"

Wow. Anyone else want to try?
SubJeff on 15/5/2013 at 13:43
You could by telling us the hardest job you've ever had.
I think it highly hypocritical to tell me I'm myopic because I think waiting isn't a hard job, despite never having been a waiter, when you're not prepared to proffer your work credentials. Have you ever been a waiter?
And Al's suggestion that one need to have worked on a job to pass judgement on its difficulty is nonsense.
I know it's a full-time job (waiting) and I know it isn't paid great. I'm not denigrating waiters, I'm just commenting on the disproportionate amount of sympathy waiters get. I can guarantee that I work longer and more stressful hours but I don't want any sympathy.

Well you don't do much to engender it either, so that all works out. :)
Regarding whether you can or cannot comment on something you haven't directly experienced, I think we can all agree that for the overwhelming majority of situations, those WITH personal experience are going to provide more useful commentary than those with none whatsoever, yes? It doesn't have to be "KNOWS EVERYTHING" vs "STFU", since we're not working on a binary knowledge system. If a waiter tells me it's a shit job, and a "random dude on the internet who does a suspiciously good job of insinuating he's really quite comfortably rich at any opportunity" tells me it's a great job and all waiters are just fucking lazy, I'm going to give the waiter more benefit of the doubt.
But maybe that's just me.

I'm not rich and have never said I am.
I never said that being a waiter was a great job.
I never said waiters are lazy.
You knee jerk dickheads are just too much. I said that I don't get why waiters engender so much sympathy over tips. And they fucking do. We've had a tipping debate before on TTLG and that should be evidence enough. That is all I said. Don't put words in my mouth you total, total asshole.
DDL on 15/5/2013 at 14:32
I never said that random dude was you. What on earth gave you that idea?

I'm a welder. Three years of training and one more year of being an apprentice. Currently working ship repairs at the docks. I love it. It's breaking my back, shitty conditions in terms of the weather, and cramped work space, but I love it, and the salary is pretty decent.
