What does Walton Simons say in the transmission he sends just after Denton aligns the satellites and sends the distress signal?
A friend is playing Deus Ex for the first time and encountered a bug at this point, in which that objective fails to be checked off (even though completed correctly), the 300 points fail to register, the voice transmission doesn't occur, but UNATCO troops still attack.

He says something like, "Denton, what an expensive mistake you turned out to be. I've ordered the troops to kill you because frankly I don't have the patience to wait for one of those damned killswitchs to work." I don't have a saved game from around then, but I'm sure the first sentence at least is right, and fairly sure about the second.
Also, did your friend perhaps go to the roof and hack the computers to send the signal without finding the datacube in the basement that had the records of Manderley's bribes? I've never encountered that bug and always go to the basement first, but that might be why it doesn't count it as completing the objective. Just a thought.

Thanks for the quick reply, SDM!
The bug might be caused by entering the satellite interface twice by different methods (hacking and then using the passcode). But I'll ask him about the datacube.

That bug occurs frequently with the 1.109 patch, although there've been reports of it with 1.112fm. AFAIK, patching the game to 1.112fm at this point won't help, but there may be a chance if your friend goes back to a save game before the HQ map, like Hell's Kitchen or the 'ton before patching.
BTW, try knocking out all the UNATCO troopers there before sending the message. The way in which Simons says "Sergeant Lewis isn't responding, so I guess you took care of the troops..." is one of the best things in the game for me.

Heh. I left the troopers on the ground floor be, and just prodded the guards on the upper floors, then sneaked out of the first floor computer room without being seen.

LOL. If only it were possible and worthwhile, it would be great to make a collection of these things.
I swear I learn something new about the game every time I visit -- despite the fact that I've always had a game of Deus Ex in progress, ever since I purchased it almost.

Hey, I was wondering, since I am doing a few things different this time, if it was possible to not send the messge? It would seem like that is where you actually betray UNATCO, but I was thinking maybe it could be when you defend Paul. Oh, I did play it to keep him alive, as well. It's quite interesting that way. I think next time I will play it on realistic, no cheats, and maybe go total stealth, hand to hand. I have made extensive use of the dart gun in the past, I'm wondering if I could do it otherwise effectively : )
Oh yeah, good call on that quote, I just passed that point, and it sounds almost verbatim.

I was about to reply with an indignant "What do you mean, almost?", but of course it's Corporal Lewis.
I blame Colin Dexter.

No, there's no way that I know of to progress with the game without sending the message, but despair not.
(I'm leaking here like a barrel with a shotgun wound.)
There's a mod in the works that allows you to play through the original, unchanged story as a female character (while keeping the option of playing as a male, of course). We are also planning to add a branch that allows the player to stay with UNATCO. In other words, more options.
Keep in mind that this is a largeish undertaking and will take time (rather a lot of it) to complete. Watch for an official announcement in the not too distant future.

This is a known bug (you are not alone) and occurs especially with older versions of the game, although I have the original unpatched version (as well as a GOTY) and never had any trouble. If I were in more of a rush, though, I probably would have had trouble. Explanation follows:
What causes it is receiving a datalink *while hacking a computer* - this was supposed to be fixed in the 1112fm patch, but apparently still sometimes occurs. If you are receiving a datalink from anyone, wait until it is done before accessing any of the computers. When you are done with the computers, exit them promptly, just to be safe.
The reason this bug occurs here and not elsewhere is because this is the place where two computer hacks (or logins) and several received datalinks occur one after another, making a problem more likely. Or so it appears to me.
The problem used to be worse - it used to disable the ability to save your game, as well. *That's* the bug they made sure to fix in the GOTY (1112fm) version.
Anyway, the datacubes in the basement have nothing to do with this, AFAIK. Take them or leave them. Paul *does* tell you that if you can hack, go on upstairs and hack.
