First person simulates a persons view, third person simulates nothing.

I always liked the idea of Thief in a future setting, or cyberpunk. Expand the genre. It's not the setting that kills a game so much as the trappings.
People might think that if it's in the future it has to be frenetic and anti-Thief ... But it doesn't have to be that way. You can keep the setting and the gameplay but get rid of all the trappings you worry about. Make it a sober setting, not cartoonish. And Cyberpunk Keepers does have a ring to it (as long as they aren't made too 1337).
And I realize it branches off the main "medieval" storyline of the original, but I think about it in terms of bringing real stealth gameplay into other settings. To the extent it's not really Thief #4 anymore, then it's Game X #1 that I want to play.
Also I can finally achieve my dream of thief in orbit, haha.

Thief already has electricity and robots. How much more futuristic it cen get. Maybe they should add Captain Spok instead of Benny to make it more "futuristic":p

I agree with demagogue that a futuristic setting wouldn't be all that bad if done right. However, I'd like to see a scenario without guns, be it the laser or the bullet kind. No guns is what made Thief's stealth gameplay work. Any other sci-fi game comes with the obligatory phaser/laser pistol/phased plasma rifle in the forty watt range, and they all make a first person shooter out of what should be a first person sneaker.

Not to mention the fact that "futuristic" somehow seems to have acquired the meaning "dark dystopia in outer space", which is really getting old. If they have to go "futuristic", they should at least try a different approach. I've seen all I ever care to see of extraterrestrial haunted mines.
I also found the concept of doing favours for the different factions to earn favours silly. Not only was it much too easy, but you didn't even have to choose sides. Doing favours for the Hammerites did not in any way lower your standing among their blood enemies, the Pagans. In the end, Garrett was everybody's darling. If there must be factions, the game should force you to choose sides, and the choices should have real consequences on the gameplay. Although personally I'd prefer Garrett to be only on one side, his own.

Even running was crappy in Thief 3: It had nothing with smoothness from the previous games. Did You notice it, too? It pissed me off all the time while playing it:mad:
So I want normal, smooth running in Thief 4( and better creep mode of course;) ).
Besides, some restricts in loot gathering would be more realistic:thief who takes limited amount of loot, but can also estimating most priceless things to take. It could be nice novum forcing the planning, especially if better awareness of stolen things would be implemented to the game.

if it were set in the future, I'd want it to be a future like Blade Runner. Down to Earth, dark and solemn. Getting around the gun issue would be hard though. You'd have to make up some "moral code" bs as to why the protagonist doesn't use guns, but I don't think you could get away with giving future-set AIs swords.
Kin on 26/7/2008 at 18:17
Maybe it would be good to be a little more futuristic than the previous games, but something like from "the metal age" to the X age". But i wouldn't agree with a huge jump to the "computer and dual core processor age".

Nahhh, it shouldn't be titled "Thief" then. Thief is story of Garrett and the City. And I believe "Thief 4" will continue the plot. There's still so much to tell about...

I have the feeling that since they are also doing DEUS EX they will leave futuristic stealth there (guards with telecoms, fancy cameras, laser beams, etc) witch leaves the medieval stealth for Thief.
Thief will not be futuristic, that was just a rumour from a guy that no longer works at Eidos and a teaser art of a Garrett thug with a pistol, it´s all discontinued now.
However there can be some amount of "steampunk" technology like the tesla lamps, explosive mines, mechanical eyes, scout orbs, etc.
