That is, without question, the most pansy-assed complaint ever.
"Oh teh noes! This game doesn't make it easy enough for me to cheat!"
Oh, stop being a dick.
-Although it's not really relevant, I'm sick and tired of character alignments in pen-and-paper RPGs.

Skill points at level up in RPGs, although I'm more tired of it than hate it. The idea that you get some sort of mystic coupon after rescuing someone's cat that you can then spend on instantly improving your sword/thieving/magic skills is silly.
The Elder Scrolls has the right idea with improving skills through use. Though the stat multipliers at level up is plain stupid.

Meh, the ES level up system is just as bad because it doesn't require meaningful use. Hacking at a mudcrab with an axe isn't going to make a decent swordsman into a master.

Fuck you, asstank. While this topic is hardly one of significance, I haven't noticed you contributing anything except your usual tiresome assholery. Why are you even bothering?

Hacking anything with an axe isn't going to make you a master
swordsman. ;)
Seriously though, it's easily fixed if you don't gain experience from beating up low level enemies when you're high level yourself. It's not perfect, but it is superior to the coupon system that's been in use since the year dot.

Oh, right. Axes are blunt weapons in ES, so it's actually a master maceman.
Anyway, I kind of like the coupon system. It's nonsensical, sure, but it works, and while skill gains for use almost works for combat, for other things....it's much less fun.

I guess I'd want to say combat engines (the easy button of game design), but rather than getting into some impassioned rant about it, I'll just vote for the clichéd fire/water/ice levels instead.
does anyone else cringe at the term "game mechanic"

What's wrong with that? It gets the idea across with being vague enough to allow almost any aspect under its umbrella (which was the desired effect).
