Wait, The Dark Mod got released?
No, I think it's getting fairly close though.

For example: Slowly crack that door to slip through instead of only having the binary choice of an open door or a closed door.
Genius, actually. Kind of like the awesome way they did it in Resident Evil 4, except it would mean a whole lot more in a game like this.

I think they could afford to take a tiny bit from Mirror's Edge. Not go full on parkour with it, but some parts of the movement system would apply pretty well. Moving sideways while hanging from ledges, quick wall climbs, and wall jumps, primarily (no wall running or coil jumping). Why use a rope arrow when you could do a couple quick wall jumps to get a hold of the balcony edge? Obviously there'd be an increased sound risk when doing wall jumps, but the benefit of getting up faster could potentially outweigh it, and it'd still be a player choice thing. And it could open up new play style challenges for us crazy types (think 'No Bow' runs and the like)

You just want a lithe medieval wench to control, admit it. It's okay. Pervert. We're all friends here.

I think Faf certainly is onto something there. There's a few times in Thief where I've had to use a rope or vine arrow to go up 2 or 3 meters, which is silly. A couple of wall jumps would sort that out.
Not full on parkour, as Faf says, just a slight 'upgrade' of the player character's movements.

what games should inspire Thief 4?
1 T:G
2 T:MA
3 T2X
(Not TDS....)
4 Deus Ex
(Not Deus Ex 2..:ebil:..)
5 Dark Messiah
6 Hitman.

Yeah, no doubt. I've always thought Garrett should be more agile than simply leap+mantling.

Being able to climb into a window without being hindered by a 6-centimeter sill.

I think adding some parkour would be a great idea too. Also second the Penumbra mention in regards to opening of doors etc. I often thought that Penumbra's way of interacting with the gameworld would have been great for a stealth game and would tie in quite well with the sound eg quietly opening drawers, creaky doors etc. I'm not sure how well that would go down with most people though.
However an open world is the big one, as long as it was an interesting open world not an enormous area with no generic quests.

Halo and Gears of War obviously.
