Doesn't using the animus to relive your badass past lives require you to have actually been a badass in your past lives? Seems as a matter of probability you're more likely to end up reliving the exciting life you had as a serf farmer, or dude who got eaten by crocodile, or dude who died of dysentery.
Your past lives? Have you ever played these games? It's not a fucking epic about Hinduism. The Animus let's you relive somebody's ancestor's life via memories stored within DNA. You have choice over which individual's memories they are too.

Yeah, but they have to be YOUR ancestor, if you're the one getting in to the animus.

Nope. Go read up on AC4.

Oh right. I've only played up to Brotherhood. I guess they had to re-jig the formula somehow.
So you can essentially be anyone from any time period then.

You can't be too pedant about it when you realize they're making it up as they go along.
It's still a cool hook for a game, anyway. Don't get me wrong.

I guess Gothic 2 would be nuts. Khorinis/Myrtana as a whole. Bizarre conversations, violence, lots of drinking/smoking weed, and sight-seeing.
It has a day/night cycle for the AI, so it appears that everyone goes to work in the AM, relaxes in the evening, and sleeps at night, which gives it some realism. I could grow accustomed eventually.

Played a bit of 1 and 2. The intro to 2 certainly gave me the impression they had to be your ancestor - why the hell go through the trouble of breaking out 1 specific dude out of that installation if any dude would work fine?
And sorry for mistaking the technobabble for Hinduism wrapped in technobabble.

Eva's getting super-confrontational these days, huh?
AC1 certainly emphasises "blood relative", and the fact that desmond is also a assassin of sorts, from a family of assassins (I can't believe I wrote that sentence) means that "past lives" is a fairly understandable term to use. Specially if you haven't played all the way up to the latest.
Also not least because it's easier to type than "genetic memories of your ancestors AND/OR those of anyone you have a DNA sample for because SCIENCE".
Plus to be honest, "past lives" would be far less aggressively stupid pseudoscience.
