Well I've got a Razer Barracuda 5.1 gaming headset that evaunit clearly despises, and while they may be overpriced for the audio quality you get, they are pretty good. I was suspicious of the marketing hype surrounding these things, but read some reviews which were generally very positive so decided to give them a shot. I'm not a massive audiophile: while I'm offended by people who listen to music on phone speakers, I don't mind listening to MP3s instead of FLACs. I think the sound quality on the Razers is good, particularly the bass. Perhaps you could get just as good quality on a pair of sennheisers for half the price, but the 5.1 surround sound is useful for playing counter-strike and the like. You can tell the difference between front and rear, which gives a fair advantage over stereo headphones and while it's no doubt inferior to a proper, quality 5.1 speaker setup, I don't really have the space or money for that, so the barracudas are a good compromise. I've also got a cambridge audio amp and decent set of speakers for listening to music as well, so the headset is mainly just for gaming anyway.
So, if as you said, you're looking a headset more or less solely for gaming purposes, it might be worth considering a 5.1 headset.

Bootleg Sennheisers are really common on the likes of Ebay.
It's not bootleg. Ebay does not mean scam, you just have to have a brain.

I suspect they're a little more expensive than what you're looking for, but I love my Sennheiser PC 350s.
I'd link to the product page, but every Sennheiser page I try at the moment fails to respond.

A fairly recent set of Zalman 5.1. Decent enough for late nights when everyone else is trying to sleep.

Gaming headsets are over-priced trash. The sound quality of the speakers are almost always horrible, especially with the gimmicky 5.1 headphones.
Buy some REAL headphones and use a clip-on mic.
Eva, I've actually got some very nice Grados, but I'm having a bear of a time finding a clip on mic that doesn't suck. Any recommendations?

TBH, I've found that they all suck too. I've been though at least three Zalman ones, they all broke easily.
I just use a Logitech/Labtec desktop mic, the range on those things is excellent.

Personally if I need to game with a headset (rarely) I use the Logitech ClearChat Pro.

Eva's right about Sennheisers. Their high-end stuff is great, but anything of theirs that can be found in a drugstore or best buy isnt' worth the money. For example, the CX-300 earbuds are the exact same product as the Creative EP-630 (when I say "exact" I mean they are an identical product, apart from some cosmetic differences), but while the Creatives can be found for between $15-40, the Sennheisers regularly sell for $90 here. Sennheiser's MX and PX series are also overpriced for the quality.
