@ Vernon RE: your last paragraph - so pretty much standard for any tech corporation then?
Vernon on 25/8/2011 at 23:58
I suppose so, though I feel Apple has set a new standard for nefarious behaviour in recent years.

The whole patent thing is a cesspool and I don't think you can blame any big player for behaving the way they do. Well, a little. But it's like europe prior to world war one; everyone arming themselves for conquest ostensibly for defense and pissing everyone else off in the process, making arming for defense/conquest look essential.
Apple were always closed, defensive seperatist pricks under their hemp clothes and moccasins. It nearly killed them too. They just stayed that way after they managed to get themselves vast power. No one should have really expected it to change them into some cheerful magnanimous shape. We just kinda think it should for some reason.

I see what you're saying, Matthew, but when it comes to being aggressively closed-source, you-should-feel-honored-to-do-it-our-way, if-you-didn't-buy-a-case-your-iphone-deserves-to-not-work jerkoffs, Apple has always taken the cake.
Which is what is really bothering me about the mainstream coverage of Job's resignation. I wouldn't expect (or ask) any respectable journalist to turn it into an Apple attack piece, but when doing a recap of his reign one should address the controversies surrounding his corporate philosophy. Instead, they read like eulogies for the Messiah.

Perhaps the most egregious example, but in a sector populated by Oracle, Sun, Microsoft and (latterly) Google I've always felt Apple looks more like first among equals in the dickishness stakes.

Well, that's the thing. Apple was always trumpeted by its fans as the noble underdog in its fight against the Evil Microsoft Empire; but these days Apple is as bad as Microsoft ever was, and (as far as I can tell) Microsoft is relatively benign. Have they done anything particularly nasty lately?
