What happened to the Keepers at the end of TDS?
theBlackman on 22/6/2008 at 22:49
As it stands, they were no longer able to "hide" from the public at large, and were out of a job. Garrett more or less became the sole "Keeper" and the rest faded into the history.
They could no longer be Keepers. If you recall the job was to KEEP the balance between good and evil. Now that they are exposed to all and sundry, they can't be hidden spys anymore or "puppet masters" anymore. How can you be a spy when everybody sees you trying to do your job, and influence events when everybody knows you are doing so?

Garrett did things like that without glyph magic. AFAIK the pure facts are that they "only" have lost their magical little helpers which they relied on a little (too) much. It doesn't affect their very purpose to keep the balance.

Blah. They better explain this in Thief 4, assuming the rumors are true. That's strange, that they'd just walk away and leave Garrett to do their work. Or am I getting it all wrong?
Oh, and I have another question about the third game. For how long had Gamall been controlling Artemus? Was it just at the end, when he morphed into her? When he mysteriously disappeared . . . was that when she possessed him, because she lost Lauryl as her vehicle? When Garrett and Artemus met in Gamall's lair, whose side was he on?
And WTF was Gamall gonna do with the final glyph? Why was she collecting the Chalice and the Paw if using them -- i.e. positioning them in the City -- was going to destroy her?
It's been a year since I played this. Don't remember now, not sure if I understood it then :erg:
And I thought Garrett had a bit of magic in him? He doesn't bust out glyphs, but I thought I read somewhere that his Keeper training made him a better sneak than humanly possible -- because of magic, not just superb physical exercise.

She was going to destroy the final glyph.

Ah, okay. I was watching cutscenes on YouTube; Orland tells Garrett not to destroy them.

I believe that with activating "The Final Glyph", all the Glyphs lose their power, including Gamall's. This was something the Old Keepers made as a last resort when someone decided to go insane and use the Glyphs for Evil purposes. That also explains why the Keeper Compound building was visible at the end of the game.

What I'm wondering is how exactly the glyphs had been hiding the Keeper compounds... In the final cut scene the people seem surprised to see a new building.
Did the glyph hide the buildings by showing something different or just cloaking the house by making the human brain "ignore" it (similar to the SEP field form the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).
That the glyphs have disappeared or been rendered useless doesn't mean the Keepers are out of work. As with the other two groups (pagans after TDP and Hammers/Mechanists after TMA) the Keepers probably have to reexamine themselves and their purpose; since obviously they have relied far too much on the glyphs.
The question is if all of their skills are dependant on glyphs; are they only good at hiding/ staying unnoticed because of their glyphs.
Do the Keepers still have a purpose anyway? If all their prophecies have been fulfilled or have vanished (being written with the Glyphs), then maybe the Keepers aren't necessary anymore.
Beleg Cúthalion on 28/6/2008 at 20:24
No one knows what the original purpose of the Keepers was, left aside from keeping the balance according to some of the TDS loading quotes. No one knows either whether these prophecies were an original part of that or just a by-product of intensive preoccupation with the City and stuff...which has become a sort of self-runner with the time.
The way this Keeper building vanished reminded me of those magical tricks in the Harry Potter books were houses and places are similarly made that they're ignored by anyone else. But thank the Builder this issue is left open.

The must have had a hella lot of glyphs to hide the whole building...
What I wonder is why the ending of TDS had such a HUGE lead-off. Were they trying to keep the franchise alive? I mean, come on, there was such a big opening for another game where the previous two had a heavy hint at it (a really obvious one, but still...)
I actually really didn't like the idea of that little girl at the end, and I can't really explain why...
