The only problem is that the Keepers kept balance by way of the glyphs. As the young acolyte in the vide questioned, how are they to keep balance now? The Keepers read the glyphs, and then pretty much relied on Garrett to make sure they followed through. Now they have no idea what to expect or do.
I was under the impression that though the glyphs played a big part in the Keepers being able to keep the balance, it was their manipulation of Garrett and others that actually kept the balance intact. The fact that the Keepers were not only watchers, but great manipulators of certain people throughout their history was what I believed to be their strong suit; what enabled them to actually keep the balance. I thought they only relied on the glyphs when things ran amuck or started to grow seriously out of balance, such as when Gamall started trying to take things over. I could be seriously wrong, since as I said it's been awhile since I've played all three games straight through.
Also, there were other books, journals, and scrolls in their library that weren't composed of glyphs but rather of first hand accounts, etc. So those would be the data that the surviving Keepers would want to keep out of the wrong hands.
And you're right GM; a lot of this speculation is straight fanfic, but fun to think about. As is wondering (worrying?) what the rumored T4 might end up becoming.

All that is very true. However, the reason the Keepers were able to manipulate Garrett and others is because of glyphs.
Okay, if I understand this correctly, the Keepers, I dunno, sit around until they write something with the glyphs. Once that is done, they might have the Interpreter (like Caudaca(sp?)) read them, or maybe someone else can.
These glyphs are like prophecy, telling in riddle what will happen in the future. Or rather, hinting at it.
Without being able to scribe and then interpret the glyphs, the Keepers don't know what will happen, and cannot guide Garrett (or anyone else) on the path they want to.
I think Keepers only
use glyphs when things get ugly, but they scribe with them all the time.
This is based on my knowledge of playing Thief (which I skipped a lot of... heh), so I don't know how accurate it is.

That's true, such as the one in TDS that talked about Garrett's usefulness in the future. Let's hope, for their sake, that they wrote the more important stuff down after they scribed it ;)
Too bad the Keeper librairies are now reduced to scrap paper :p

By "Orland & Co." I just meant the Keepers. Dunno why I didn't put it that way.
And omgosh, I never took "They're all gone ... What will the city become without us?" or whatever as referring to the glyphs! Maybe the Keepers still hold some power. Everything is so much more interesting with them than without them. Seriously, they're the most screwed up society in fiction. They serve a sort of guardian angel purpose, yet at the same time they're conniving, manipulative snakes.
Also, I feel like Thief 4 could just totally ignore the girl seen at the end of TDS, and hardly anyone would look twice. I woudn't.
Anywhoz, I missed a lot of this thread and I don't even know what to say about your speculations. Thief is definitely the deepest, most interesting video game (series) I've ever come across. Stays with me forever, pops into my head at the worst times. I'd call myself a junkie if it wasn't so intelligent.
Actually, I'd still call myself a junkie.
I hope the Thief 4 people are reading this thread, by some miracle. Damn, but they could get a lot out of it.
Further thoughts:
First of all, it seems Garrett had been bumped down a few notches on the age scale at the end of TDS. He looked like a 20-year-old.
Second, the idea that Gamall was of another high order, an antithesis to the Keepers, thrills me. Them surrounding her at the end of TDS and punishing her for her crimes ... Or what if she was with them all along, was their instrument for seizing control of the City and bringing down the Keepers all in one stroke? Yum!
Actually that couldn't work; she wanted all the glory for herself, so would clearly not have been affiliated with another party.
And the protagonist just has to be Garrett. Even if the girl was a boy, it still wouldn't work. They'd have to devise a different personality for him, probably a compassionate one seeing as that's as far away from Garrett from they can get. And no one wants that. We want cynicism and sarcasm

Well, just to liven things up a bit...
What happened to the artifact things in the monuments?
"What a pretty fount- OH MY GOD, IT'S AN EYE!"

"What a pretty fount- OH MY GOD, IT'S AN EYE!"
"The Builder hath returned his chalice to us!"
"Them Jacknall's Paw! It bes coming back to us!"
:)
But yes, where does the Eye go? Back to Wieldstrom?
jtr7 on 6/8/2008 at 23:57
A few things.:p
From AULalbrechwritings.sch: "...we devised the Sentients, each a separate key, each with a will of its own. The Heart, the Crown, the Paw, the Chalice, and the Eye. They would not consent to the journey, which would culminate in their annihilation, until the time was ripe and the One was present. To ensure success, five Keepers were recruited to make the crucial sacrifices."
If they retained their own will after the activation of the Final Glyph, and only the Keeper aspect was annihilated, they would be free to go where they wanted, as they had in the past.
The famous M11EYE.str: "Brother Gerard,
The behavior we hath repeatedly seen exhibited is truly most troublesome. The Eye hath been moved once again to the vault in the cellar. This eve, please you post two sentinels to guard it. Thus we shall determine how it is that we find it floating o'er the high altar each morn."
From AULartifactlist.sch: "For the Heart and the Eye, they are attention seekers - and this has brought them both to the Wieldstrom Museum where they pass as ordinary displays. There they feed their desire to wound, to entrap, to pollute the minds of susceptible humans. The Eye is fueled by the flesh eye of my adversary. I wonder what that Sentient will have to say to me, when I finally hold it in my hands."
From KCartifacts.sch: "An Artifact serves no master but itself."
"Following the movements of these elusive objects is relatively easy, as each subsequent owner falls prey to their influences."
"To trace the history of the Artifacts is to trace a history of strife and chaos. Where they appear, war follows, or catastrophe."
From MUSCurator1.sch: "Crowley got himself fired yesterday. He told Curator one of the displays kept talking to him, tellin' him things."
m10v02: "Comes a thief in the night. Am I the prize? But I like this place. So many humans...they entertain me. What have you to offer?"
m10v06: "Ah, you have found my sister, The Heart. Does she whisper to you? Many have wiled away their very days waiting for just one word from her."
m99v01: "What are you doing, little man? Do you know about the ancient plan? The pact between us Sentients and the early Keepers? Or do you act on instinct?"
m99v05: "The other Sentients...so sad and simple. Most of them cannot even speak yet. But we are all happy to have our potential unlocked at last, our power. But only I am the final one. The last one."
m99v06a: "Fascinating. ...I see it is the thief who wishes to unlock our powers. Either way...our destiny approaches."
m10v01d: "We have much in common, little man. We are both marked...destined always to be part of history...never just observers."

Holy crap I missed a lot, I need to play this game again. I still believe T3's plot is better (more complex) than T1 and T2.
jtr7 on 10/8/2008 at 23:02
There are more texts and voice media in TDS, than in both the older games combined.

Well, maybe the Ancient Keepers are still out there, somewhere? No-one said that they "went extinct" or whatever.
I agree that the Keepers still retained some of their power, and that they did not disperse. How could Garrett call himself a Keeper if there won't be any others?
Actually, what really intrigued me in the final cutscene was Gamall saying "Back with you." Back with whom? The Glyphs? The Keepers? Or what?
